Remote operation of optical microscopes for use in science and engineering laboratories

TL;DR: An optical microscope that can be operated via the internet using most of the internet and networking capable devices including laptops and desktop computers, currently being used to perform thin film characterization experiments in microelectronics laboratory.
Abstract: We have engineered an optical microscope that can be operated via the internet using most of the internet and networking capable devices including laptops and desktop computers. The system offers a user the ability to conduct visual inspection of samples, microelectronic devices and manipulation experiments in the field of biology. The remote controlled microscope is programmed to perform acquisition of images. The instrument is currently being used to perform thin film characterization experiments in microelectronics laboratory. Such a system may find a wide range of new applications for science experiments.

TL;DR: The design and prototype implementation of an online laboratory management system (for use with shared hardware-based remote laboratory resources) which may be employed for running internet-based online laboratory courses for geographically dispersed Institutions are described.
Abstract: Online hardware-based educational laboratories are increasingly being deployed in traditional on-campus as well as Web-based distance-learning courses around the world. An online laboratory generally will consist of several hardware-based remote experiments. However, one particular experiment can be performed at a time by an individual student or a group of students which require a careful scheduling of the experiments. For the proper implementation of an online laboratory an efficient laboratory management system (LMS) is thus essential. Also for an online laboratory, the students need to fully understand the experimental system setup and feel comfortable as in an actual laboratory environment which, however, can be effectively done by adding suitable videos and animations etc. Besides, the students should be able to run the remote experiments, extract, save and analyze the data and submit laboratory reports online. The front end of the laboratory management system should be made browser-based so that one can use the laboratory facility from anywhere. Also, for the teachers, the laboratory management system should include an online evaluation for the quiz/viva-voce, checking experimental data, grading of submitted laboratory reports and feedback for the students. In this paper, we describe the design and prototype implementation of an online laboratory management system (for use with shared hardware-based remote laboratory resources) which may be employed for running internet-based online laboratory courses for geographically dispersed Institutions.

TL;DR: Some of the possible methods for scheduling of online experiments which may be integrated in online laboratory management systems for optimized resource utilization are discussed.
Abstract: Online remotely-controlled educational laboratories are increasingly being deployed in many universities around the world. As hardware-based remote experiment can only be used by one person or a group of persons at a time, for proper utilization of the resources, an efficient time scheduling scheme is essential. In this work, we discuss some of the possible methods for scheduling of online experiments which may be integrated in online laboratory management systems for optimized resource utilization.

TL;DR: In this article, the design and implementation of a remotely controlled online (internet-based) experiment on thin film characterization for nanotechnology laboratory using atomic force microscope (AFM) is reported.
Abstract: Design and implementation of a remotely controlled online (internet-based) experiment on thin film characterization for nanotechnology laboratory using atomic force microscope (AFM) is reported. Based on a commercially available low-cost AFM (Model NanoSurf EasyScan2) and National Instruments (NI) LabVIEW graphical programming environment, we have developed the remote-controlled AFM measurement system. The system is available online for use by the geographically distributed students to share and run experiments via standard web browsers. The infrastructure for the nanoelectronics laboratory is described and applications of this infrastructure to nanoelectronics education are discussed. Students and researchers could benefit by sharing the AFM through internet.
