Research on Soft Computing Techniques for Cognitive Radio

Abstract: Presently, the world of wireless communication is going under some crucial challenges, which attracts the attention of several researchers. Cognitive radio is defined as a multidimensional aware, autonomous radio system that learns from its experiences to reason, plan & decide future actions to meet user needs. Such a highly varied radio environment calls on intelligent management, allocation & usage of scarce resources. Issues like spectrum sensing & allocation, environmental learning i.e., adaptability & capability to learn attracts the attention of several soft computing learning & optimization techniques like neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithm & swarm intelligence. The cognitive engine behind the radio combines the sensing, learning, switching, and optimization algorithms to control & adapt the radio system from the physical layer to the top of the communication stack. This paper presents a critical review on different soft computing approaches applied over the cognitive radio issues & also points out different research directions over it.

Abstract: In this paper, we discuss a parallel multi-objective genetic algorithm (PMOGA)-based approach for efficient spectrum utilization in cognitive radio (CR). It addresses multiple objective issues in spectrum utilization like minimization of bit error rate and interference with maximization of throughput by considering the constraints like maximum value of interference level on primary user and maximum value of BER of the secondary user. The rest of the paper is organized as follows: Sect. 5.2 presents application of multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) in spectrum utilization. PMOGA-based spectrum utilization technique is proposed and discussed in Sect. 5.3. Experimental analysis and summary are given in Sects. 5.4 and 5.5, respectively.

Abstract: This paper presents the expected transmission count metric (ETX), which finds high-throughput paths on multi-hop wireless networks. ETX minimizes the expected total number of packet transmissions (including retransmissions) required to successfully deliver a packet to the ultimate destination. The ETX metric incorporates the effects of link loss ratios, asymmetry in the loss ratios between the two directions of each link, and interference among the successive links of a path. In contrast, the minimum hop-count metric chooses arbitrarily among the different paths of the same minimum length, regardless of the often large differences in throughput among those paths, and ignoring the possibility that a longer path might offer higher throughput.This paper describes the design and implementation of ETX as a metric for the DSDV and DSR routing protocols, as well as modifications to DSDV and DSR which allow them to use ETX. Measurements taken from a 29-node 802.11b test-bed demonstrate the poor performance of minimum hop-count, illustrate the causes of that poor performance, and confirm that ETX improves performance. For long paths the throughput improvement is often a factor of two or more, suggesting that ETX will become more useful as networks grow larger and paths become longer.

Abstract: Ants colonies exhibit very interesting behaviours: even if a single ant only has simple capabilities, the behaviour of a whole ant colony is highly structured. This is the result of coordinated interactions. But, as communication possibilities among ants are very limited, interactions must be based on very simple flows of information. In this paper we explore the implications that the study of ants behaviour can have on problem solving and optimization. We introduce a distributed problem solving environment and propose its use to search for a solution to the travelling salesman problem.
