Rhythm and melody as social signals for infants.

Abstract: Infants typically experience music through social interactions with others. One such experience involves caregivers singing to infants while holding and bouncing them rhythmically. These highly social interactions shape infant music perception and may also influence social cognition and behavior. Moving in time with others-interpersonal synchrony-can direct infants' social preferences and prosocial behavior. Infants also show social preferences and selective prosociality toward singers of familiar, socially learned melodies. Here, we discuss recent studies of the influence of musical engagement on infant social cognition and behavior, highlighting the importance of rhythmic movement and socially relevant melodies.

Introduction
Social interactions are arguably the most important part of an infant’s daily life.
Human infants are particularly dependent on their caregivers, making social interactions
critical for survival. Infants may be drawn to social stimuli for this reason. They prefer
faces to other visual stimuli

voices to other auditory stimuli,

and they are sensitive to
eye-contact with a social partner.

Social interactions between infants and caregivers are typically multimodal.
Caregivers talk and sing to infants, often in conjunction with touch, movement, and
positive facial expressions. Around the world, caregivers sing to infants while rocking or
bouncing them to the regular pulse of the music. We argue that these rhythmic and
melodic musical interactions are a source of important social information to infants. In
support of this claim, we highlight a selection of recent findings from our laboratories and
others.

Rhythm perception skills allow listeners to track musical sequences in terms of
their rhythm (i.e., pattern of sound onsets and offsets), beat (i.e., underlying pulse), and
meter (i.e., hierarchical organization of strong and weak beats). The perception of beat
and meter is driven in part by bottom-up processes, shaped by top-down processes, and
altered by experience (for a review, see Ref. 12). Growing evidence suggests very early
sensitivity to the temporal organization of musical sequences. Electroencephalography
(EEG) with sleeping newborns reveals sensitivity to the onsets, offsets, and tempo of tone
sequences.

Infant brains also respond to the omission of metrically important tones in a
rhythm pattern, implying sensitivity to the beat.

Awake, alert infants at 7 and 15 months
of age show neural entrainment to the beat and meter of rhythmic patterns.

findings indicate that the very immature auditory system can extract and organize
temporal stimuli.
Behavioral studies reveal that young infants can discriminate changes in tempo

Moreover, they recognize specific rhythm patterns across different
tempos.

Infants also categorize melodies on the basis of meter, distinguishing patterns
in duple meter (two-beat divisions) from those in triple meter (three-beat divisions).

Abstract: Significance Singing to infants is observed in all human cultures. Beyond known roles in infant soothing and social bonding, this study shows that singing to infants elicits physical entrainment, an elemental phenomenon enabling synchronization of wide-ranging physical and biological processes. Here, singing synchronizes subsecond social visual interactions between infants and adults. When an adult sings expressively to an infant, infants often increase their looking to the adult’s eyes around the musical beats. Adults also synchronize their facial expressions in time to their singing, presenting facial expressions on the beats that are more positive and engaging than those between beats. The rhythm of infant-directed singing thus entrains rich social-communicative interpersonal engagement, providing a remarkable yet ready-made means of supporting infants’ social development.

Abstract: Humans must process fleeting auditory information in real time, such as speech and music. The amplitude modulation of the acoustic waveforms of speech and music is rhythmically organized in time, following, for example, the beats of music or the syllables of speech, and this property enables temporal prediction and proactive perceptual optimization. At the neural level, external rhythmic sensory input entrains internal neural oscillatory activities, including low-frequency (e.g., delta, 1-4 Hz) phase, high-frequency (e.g., beta, 15-25 Hz) power, and their phase-amplitude coupling. These neural entrainment activities represent internal temporal prediction and proactive perceptual optimization. The present thesis investigated two critical but previously unsolved questions. First, do these multiple entrainment mechanisms for tracking auditory rhythm have distinct but coordinated perceptual functions? Second, does regularity in the temporal (when) domain associate with prediction and perception in the orthogonal spectral (what) domain of audition? This thesis addressed these topics by combining electroencephalography (EEG), psychophysics, and statistical modeling approaches. Chapter II shows that beta power entrainment reflects both rhythmic temporal prediction (when events are expected) and violation of spectral information prediction (what events are expected). Chapter III further demonstrates that degree of beta power entrainment prior to a pitch change reflects how well an upcoming pitch change will be predicted. Chapter IV reveals that rhythmic organization of sensory input proactively facilitates pitch perception. Trial-by-trial behavioural-neural associations suggested that delta phase entrainment reflects temporal expectation, beta power entrainment reflects temporal attention, and their phaseamplitude coupling reflects the alignment of these two perceptual mechanisms and is associated with auditory-motor communication. Together, this thesis advanced our understanding of how neural entrainment mechanisms relate to perceptual functions for tracking auditory events in time, which are essential for perceiving speech and music.

Abstract: Music performance is both a natural human activity, present in all societies, and one of the most complex and demanding cognitive challenges that the human mind can undertake. Unlike most other sensory-motor activities, music performance requires precise timing of several hierarchically organized actions, as well as precise control over pitch interval production, implemented through diverse effectors according to the instrument involved. We review the cognitive neuroscience literature of both motor and auditory domains, highlighting the value of studying interactions between these systems in a musical context, and propose some ideas concerning the role of the premotor cortex in integration of higher order features of music with appropriately timed and organized actions.

Abstract: Making eye contact is the most powerful mode of establishing a communicative link between humans. During their first year of life, infants learn rapidly that the looking behaviors of others conveys significant information. Two experiments were carried out to demonstrate special sensitivity to direct eye contact from birth. The first experiment tested the ability of 2- to 5-day-old newborns to discriminate between direct and averted gaze. In the second experiment, we measured 4-month-old infants' brain electric activity to assess neural processing of faces when accompanied by direct (as opposed to averted) eye gaze. The results show that, from birth, human infants prefer to look at faces that engage them in mutual gaze and that, from an early age, healthy babies show enhanced neural processing of direct gaze. The exceptionally early sensitivity to mutual gaze demonstrated in these studies is arguably the major foundation for the later development of social skills.

Abstract: Sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) is the coordination of rhythmic movement with an external rhythm, ranging from finger tapping in time with a metronome to musical ensemble performance. An earlier review (Repp, 2005) covered tapping studies; two additional reviews (Repp, 2006a, b) focused on music performance and on rate limits of SMS, respectively. The present article supplements and extends these earlier reviews by surveying more recent research in what appears to be a burgeoning field. The article comprises four parts, dealing with (1) conventional tapping studies, (2) other forms of moving in synchrony with external rhythms (including dance and nonhuman animals’ synchronization abilities), (3) interpersonal synchronization (including musical ensemble performance), and (4) the neuroscience of SMS. It is evident that much new knowledge about SMS has been acquired in the last 7 years.
