TL;DR: In this article, the use of accelerometers for measuring a blood analyte, such as glucose, is discussed, where the accelerometer can be used in conjunction with analyte monitoring that may be performed with infrared, near infrared, or other wavelength spectroscopy.
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to methods, devices, and systems for measuring a blood analyte, such as glucose. The disclosure relates more specifically to the use in such methods, devices, and systems of one or more accelerometers to aid in the collection of data, operation of the device, filtering, and other uses. In some embodiments, the accelerometers are three-dimensional accelerometers. An accelerometer can be used in conjunction with analyte monitoring that may be performed with infrared, near infrared, or other wavelength spectroscopy. The accelerometer may allow a monitoring instrument to expect noisy measurement data, indicate positioning of a measurement site for improved expected results, indicate position of the instrument, or help the user properly place or control the instrument. It may also improve analyte monitoring by providing motion information that can be used to help determine and reduce or remove movement-related signal artifacts or noise that may be present within the monitoring signal.

TL;DR: In this paper, a plurality of vantages may be distributed throughout a viewing volume from which the environment is to be viewed, representing the view of the environment from that vantage.
Abstract: An environment may be displayed from a viewpoint. According to one method, volumetric video data may be acquired depicting the environment, for example, using a tiled camera array. A plurality of vantages may be distributed throughout a viewing volume from which the environment is to be viewed. The volumetric video data may be used to generate video data for each vantage, representing the view of the environment from that vantage. User input may be received designating a viewpoint within the viewing volume. From among the plurality of vantages, a subset nearest to the viewpoint may be identified. The video data from the subset may be retrieved and combined to generate viewpoint video data depicting the environment from the viewpoint. The viewpoint video data may be displayed for the viewer to display a view of the environment from the viewpoint selected by the user.

TL;DR: In this paper, a video stream for a scene for a virtual reality or augmented reality experience may be stored and delivered to a viewer, where the video stream may be divided into a plurality of units based on time segmentation, viewpoint segmentation and/or view orientation segmentation.
Abstract: A video stream for a scene for a virtual reality or augmented reality experience may be stored and delivered to a viewer. The video stream may be divided into a plurality of units based on time segmentation, viewpoint segmentation, and/or view orientation segmentation. Each of the units may be divided into a plurality of sub-units based on a different segmentation from the units, via time segmentation, viewpoint segmentation, and/or view orientation segmentation. At least a portion of the video stream may be stored in a file that includes a plurality of the units. Each unit may be a group of pictures that is a sequence of successive frames in time. Each sub-unit may be a vantage defining a viewpoint from which the scene is viewable. Each vantage may be further divided into tiles, each of which is part of the vantage, limited to one or more particular view orientations.

TL;DR: In this paper, a plurality of image sensors arranged in a pattern such that gaps exist between adjacent image sensors of the plurality of sensors, each of the image sensors may be configured to capture sensor image data.
Abstract: An image capture system includes a plurality of image sensors arranged in a pattern such that gaps exist between adjacent image sensors of the plurality of image sensors. Each of the image sensors may be configured to capture sensor image data. The image capture system may also have a main lens configured to direct incoming light along an optical path, a microlens array positioned within the optical path, and a plurality of tapered fiber optic bundles. Each tapered fiber optic bundle may have a leading end positioned within the optical path, and a trailing end positioned proximate one of the image sensors. The leading end may have a larger cross-sectional area than the trailing end. Sensor data from the image sensors may be combined to generate a single light-field image that is substantially unaffected by the gaps.

TL;DR: Electro-optic modulators are one of the most critical components in optoelectronic integration, and decreasing their size may enable novel chip architectures, and here a high-speed electro-optical modulator in compact silicon structures is experimentally demonstrated.
Abstract: Metal interconnections are expected to become the limiting factor for the performance of electronic systems as transistors continue to shrink in size. Replacing them by optical interconnections, at different levels ranging from rack-to-rack down to chip-to-chip and intra-chip interconnections, could provide the low power dissipation, low latencies and high bandwidths that are needed. The implementation of optical interconnections relies on the development of micro-optical devices that are integrated with the microelectronics on chips. Recent demonstrations of silicon low-loss waveguides, light emitters, amplifiers and lasers approach this goal, but a small silicon electro-optic modulator with a size small enough for chip-scale integration has not yet been demonstrated. Here we experimentally demonstrate a high-speed electro-optical modulator in compact silicon structures. The modulator is based on a resonant light-confining structure that enhances the sensitivity of light to small changes in refractive index of the silicon and also enables high-speed operation. The modulator is 12 micrometres in diameter, three orders of magnitude smaller than previously demonstrated. Electro-optic modulators are one of the most critical components in optoelectronic integration, and decreasing their size may enable novel chip architectures.

TL;DR: A surgical severing and stapling instrument clamps, suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A surgical severing and stapling instrument clamps, suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil. An E-beam firing bar moves distally through the clamped end effector to sever tissue and to drive staples on each side of the cut. The E-beam firing bar affirmatively spaces the spaces the anvil from the elongate channel to assure properly formed closed staples, especially when an amount of tissue is clamped that is inadequate to space the end effector. In particular, an upper pin of the firing bar longitudinally moves through an anvil slot and a channel clot is captured between a lower cap and a middle pin of the firing bar to assure a minimum spacing.

TL;DR: In this paper, a surgical system consisting of an endoscopic instrument, a camera on the endoscopy instrument, and a transmitter operatively connected to the camera for transmitting, over a telecommunications link to a remote location beyond a range of direct manual contact with the patient's body.
Abstract: A surgical system comprises an endoscopic instrument, a camera on the endoscopic instrument for obtaining video images of internal body tissues inside a patient's body via the endoscopic instrument, and a transmitter operatively connected to the camera for transmitting, over a telecommunications link to a remote location beyond a range of direct manual contact with the patient's body, a video signal encoding the video image. A receiver is provided for receiving actuator control signals from the remote location via the telecommunications link. The receiver feeds the signals to a robot actuator mechanism for controlling that mechanism to operate a surgical instrument insertable into the patient's body.

TL;DR: In this article, a surgical stapling and severing instrument particularly suited to endoscopic procedures is presented, which employs a handle that produces separate closing and firing motions to actuate an end-effector.
Abstract: A surgical stapling and severing instrument particularly suited to endoscopic procedures incorporates a handle that produces separate closing and firing motions to actuate an end effector. In particular, the handle produces multiple firing strokes in order to reduce the required amount of force required to fire (i.e., staple and sever) the end effector. A linked transmission reduces the required handle longitudinal length, yet achieves a rigid, strong configuration when straightened for firing. A traction biased firing mechanism avoids binding in driving this straightened linked rack in cooperation with an anti-backup mechanism, with a lockout mechanism that prevents releasing the closure trigger during firing. Furthermore, an external indicator gives feedback to the surgeon as to how far firing has progressed, as well as providing a manual retraction capability.

TL;DR: In this article, a surgical stapling and severing instrument particularly suited to endoscopic articulates an end effector by having a general articulation mechanism that converts rotational motion from a handle portion.
Abstract: A surgical stapling and severing instrument particularly suited to endoscopic articulates an end effector by having a general articulation mechanism that converts rotational motion from a handle portion. A firing bar longitudinally translates between the handle portion and the end effector. The firing bar head is thickened in order to present an undistorted cutting edge and engagement features to the opposing jaws of the end effector. The firing bar also advantageously includes a thinned or tapered proximal portion in the form of a strip or band that negotiates the articulation mechanism flexibility. To prevent buckling of the firing bar strip during firing, a pair of support plates adjustably flank the firing bar strip through the articulation mechanism. To advantageously prevent pinching, retaining bars are positioned between the support plates above the firing bar to maintain spacing therethrough.
