TLDR
Schlieren PIV as discussed by the authors analyzes motion between consecutive schlieren or shadowgraph frames to obtain velocity fields and shows significant promise for general refractive turbulent flow velocimetry if its integrative nature can be overcome through sharp-focusing optics.

Violent expiratory events: on coughing and sneezing

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the results of a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the fluid dynamics of such violent expiratory events, which reveals that such flows are multiphase turbulent buoyant clouds with suspended droplets of various sizes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Background-oriented schlieren (BOS) techniques

TL;DR: The main advantages of this technique, the experimental simplicity and the robustness of correlation-based digital analysis, mean that it is widely used, and variant versions are reviewed in the article.
Journal ArticleDOI

A schlieren optical study of the human cough with and without wearing masks for aerosol infection control.

TL;DR: The schlieren optical method, previously applied mostly in engineering and physics, can be effectively used here to visualize airflows around human subjects in such indoor situations, non-intrusively and without the need for either tracer gas or airborne particles.
Journal ArticleDOI

A review of recent developments in schlieren and shadowgraph techniques

TL;DR: Schlieren and shadowgraph techniques are used around the world for imaging and measuring phenomena in transparent media as mentioned in this paper, and although it might seem that little new could be expected of them on the timescale of 15 years, in fact several important things have happened that are reviewed here.
Journal ArticleDOI

Observing and quantifying airflows in the infection control of aerosol- and airborne-transmitted diseases: an overview of approaches

TL;DR: A number of different techniques have been applied to examine the temporal–spatial information about the airflow patterns and the movement of related, suspended material within this air in a hospital setting, suitable for a clinical readership without specialist airflow or engineering knowledge.

Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a practical guide for the planning, performance and understanding of experiments employing the PIV technique, which is primarily intended for engineers, scientists and students, who already have some basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and nonintrusive optical measurement techniques.

Particle Image Velocimetry

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors use hot-wire (HW) or laser velocimetry (LV) to estimate the velocity, vorticity, and pressure fields of wake flows.

Schlieren and shadowgraph techniques

TL;DR: A review of recent developments in shadowgraph and schlieren visualization can be found in this paper, where the authors present a detailed overview of the shadowgraph technique for flow visualization.

Optimization of particle image velocimeters. I, Double pulsed systems

TL;DR: In this paper, a set of six non-dimensional parameters that are the most significant in optimizing particle image velocimeter performance are identified, which are the data validation criterion, the particle image density, the relative in-plane image displacement, a velocity gradient parameter, and the ratio of the mean image diameter to the interrogation spot diameter.
