Selections from the prison notebooks of Antonio Gramsci

TL;DR: The first selection published from Gramsci's Prison Notebooks to be made available in Britain, and was originally published in the early 1970s as discussed by the authors, was the first publication of the Notebooks in the UK.
Abstract: Antonio Gramsci's Prison Notebooks, written between 1929 and 1935, are the work of one of the most original thinkers in twentieth century Europe. Gramsci has had a profound influence on debates about the relationship between politics and culture. His complex and fruitful approach to questions of ideology, power and change remains crucial for critical theory. This volume was the first selection published from the Notebooks to be made available in Britain, and was originally published in the early 1970s. It contains the most important of Gramsci's notebooks, including the texts of The Modern Prince, and Americanism and Fordism, and extensive notes on the state and civil society, Italian history and the role of intellectuals. TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the research method of participatory action research, first by examining the roots of this approach and then analysing the shift to using more participatory approaches than in former years.
Abstract: This paper explores the research method of participatory action research, first by examining the roots of this approach and then analysing the shift to using more participatory approaches than in former years. It begins by considering the reasoning and theoretical underpinning for adopting this approach and provides an overview of the steps to be undertaken when implementing participatory action research. The latter section of the paper presents an example and suggests how participatory action research might have been used instead for a study that utilized open-ended questionnaires undertaken in geography. Finally, tips on how to use it are proposed along with a consideration of the challenges and opportunities.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that the mainstream pedagogy of intercultural contact and communication has tended to give precedence to linguistic and cultural knowledge, the 'translation' of such knowledge, hence 'intercultural competence'.
Abstract: The mainstream pedagogy of intercultural contact and communication has tended to give precedence to linguistic and cultural knowledge, the 'translation' of such knowledge, hence 'intercultural competence'. This paper argues what has been overlooked is the essential power saturation of intercultural encounters, where power is defined as textual practice of domination, exclusion or prejudice as well as contextual background of such relations and practices. As its central task, the paper suggests accordingly that new and alternative pedagogical discourses of combating power are needed and how such discourses can be implemented. Basically, this discursive transformation of intercultural pedagogy means that we teachers, trainers and consultants should try to introduce the discourses of diversity, equality, common goals and above all rational-moral motivation with respect to the Other - to society at large, starting with its youngest members possible. Methodologically, this work requires that we abandon the tra...

TL;DR: The authors argue that the Varieties of capitalism literature is premised upon an institutional reductionism which necessitates the search for a more holistic approach, and propose an alternative explanation of the evolution of the Dutch and German political economies in order to demonstrate the advantages of the framework.
Abstract: Conceived as considerably broader than simply the Varieties of Capitalism framework, I argue that the varieties of capitalism literature is premised upon an institutional reductionism which necessitates the search for a more holistic approach. In brief, if we are to explain convincingly the evolution of national political economies, then we must acknowledge that varieties of capitalism are also varieties in capitalism. In particular, Antonio Gramsci's writings on common sense enable us to focus on the role of institutions as a historical force without abandoning the system of production that they are part of. I then provide an alternative explanation, compared to the varieties of capitalism literature, of the evolution of the Dutch and German political economies in order to demonstrate the advantages of the framework I develop.

TL;DR: The authors of as mentioned in this paper argue that the performance relationship between form and environment is sufficiently invariant that equilibrium fixed points will be reached, independent of dynamic path, and emphasize the relative performances, and hence death rates, of different forms in different environments.
Abstract: Current organization theories explain organizational form essentially through selection That is, instead of focusing on the dynamics of emergence, the field as a whole adopts as its epistemology consequentialism, which emphasizes the relative performances, and hence death rates, of different forms in different environments The hope of the field is that the performance relationship between form and environment is sufficiently invariant that equilibrium fixed points will be reached, independent of dynamic path This shared epistemological stance hardly implies that theoretical consensus has been reached Strong debates flourish over which selection environment is the most powerful (markets vs states vs professions); over what is the proper unit of selection (standard operating procedures vs contracts vs legitimation principles vs structural phenotypes); and over what role strategic choice plays in macro selection (constitutive vs epiphenomenal) All these debates reveal that "performance," the criterion for selection, is far more difficult to define, much less measure, than may at first appear Such operational difficulties aside, the field's epistemological convergence on consequentialism has had the virtue of permitting debates to be tight and well focused

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present findings from an ethnographic study of a UK-based amateur rugby union club for gay and bisexual men, finding that the club inadvertently promoted a liberal image towards dominant heterosexual sporting norms and in this sense, co-opted into mainstream rugby culture.
Abstract: This paper presents findings from an ethnographic study of a UK-based amateur rugby union club for gay and bisexual men. Positioning the club at the centre of the research, heterosexist definitions of sport are analysed with regard to their effect on the lives of players and the continued existence of the club itself. The standpoint of team members in relation to dominant hegemonic forces in sport is explored through an examination of the sexual politics of the club and the possibility for iterative challenges to gender norms within this particular sporting context. The central findings indicate that the club inadvertently promoted a liberal image towards dominant heterosexual sporting norms and, in this sense, co-opted into mainstream rugby culture.
