TL;DR: In this paper , the authors explored the data carrying capacity enhancement in free space optics (FSO) transmission systems by employing orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing technique and showed that the best performance occurred when using NRZ modulation and a favorable 40 Gb/s transmission along a range varying from 64 to 800 m depending on the external weather conditions.
Abstract: This paper explores the data carrying capacity enhancement in free space optics (FSO) transmission systems by employing orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing technique. Specifically, simulative investigation of OAM-FSO terrestrial transmission is carried out under varying weather conditions. A net data capacity of 40 Gb/s over free space transmission medium is demonstrated using four distinct OAM beams (LG0,0, LG0,13, LG0,40, and LG0,80). The performance is compared for alternate mark inversion (AMI), return-to-zero (RZ), and non-return-to-zero (NRZ) encoding schemes. The results showed that the best performance occurred when using NRZ modulation and a favorable 40 Gb/s transmission along a range varying from 64 to 800 m depending on the external weather conditions is reported.

TL;DR: In this paper, a WDM-FSO communication system of a high-speed hybrid signal with four wavelengths that are modulated with different signals using a single beam was proposed and demonstrated.
Abstract: A wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) free-space optical (FSO) communication system of a high-speed hybrid signal is proposed and demonstrated in this study. This study is the first to transmit a high-speed hybrid signal mixed with four wavelengths that are modulated with different signals, namely 10, 25, 28, and 32 Gb/s, using a single beam. Favourable bit error rate (BER) and clear eye maps are achieved by adopting parameters after investigating the bandwidth of tuneable optical bandpass filter, channel spacing, and number of mixed light channel effects on system performance. The WDM-FSO communication system of a high-speed hybrid signal has a simple configuration, low cost, and low BER.

TL;DR: In this paper, the empirical relation A = aR^{b} between the specific attenuation A and the rain rate R is used in the calculation of rain attenuation statistics.
Abstract: Because of its simplicity, the empirical relation A = aR^{b} between the specific attenuation A and the rainrate R is often used in the calculation of rain attenuation statistics. Values for the frequency-dependent parameters a and b are available, however, for only a limited number of frequencies. Some of these values, furthermore, were obtained experimentally, and may contain errors due to limitations in the experimental techniques employed. The aR^{b} relation is shown to be an approximation to a more general relation, except in the low-frequency and optical limits. Because the approximation is a good one, however, a comprehensive and self-consistent set of values for a and b is presented in both tabular and graphical form for the frequency range f = 1-1000 GHz. These values were computed by applying logarithmic regression to Mie scattering calculations. The dropsize distributions of Laws and Parsons, Marshall and Palmer, and Joss et al., were employed to provide calculations applicable to "widespread" and "convective" rain. Empirical equations for some of the curves of a(f) and b(f) are presented for use in systems studies requiring calculations at many frequencies. Some comparison is also made with experimental results, and suggestions are given regarding application of the various calculations.

TL;DR: A novel free space optical (FSO) system that represents a significant breakthrough in the area of FSO communications is reviewed, which is tested in a double-pass FSO link between two buildings in Pisa, Italy.
Abstract: We review a novel free space optical (FSO) system that represents a significant breakthrough in the area of FSO communications. The system encompasses a pair of novel terminals: these allow direct and transparent optical connection to common single mode fibers and include a dedicated electronic control unit that effectively tracks the signal beam wandering due to atmospheric turbulence and mechanical vibrations. Further improvement in the signal power stabilization is achieved by means of saturated EDFAs. These solutions allow to realize a new FSO system, which is tested in a double-pass FSO link between two buildings in Pisa, Italy. When the terminals are fed by common WDM signals they allow enough power budget and margins to support a record high capacity transmission (32times40 Gbit/s), with a enormous improvement of stability (six hours with no error burst). During day-long transmission, the system behavior has been deeply characterized to correlate any increase of bit error ratio (BER) to the FSO control parameters.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluate the tradeoff in optical slice linewidth between signal-to-excess optical noise ratio and dispersion penalty in spectrum-sliced WDM systems and determine the channel slicewidth that minimizes transmission penalty.
Abstract: We simulate transmission of a spectrum-sliced WDM channel operating at high bit rates (e.g., 622 to 2488 Mb/s). We calculate the bit error rate using the non-Gaussian statistics of thermal light sources that are commonly used in spectrum slicing and account for the effects of fiber dispersion. We evaluate the tradeoff in optical slice linewidth between signal-to-excess optical noise ratio and dispersion penalty in spectrum-sliced WDM systems, and determine the channel slicewidth that minimizes transmission penalty for a given link length and bit rate. We compare our simulations against the measured performance of a 1244 Mb/s channel over 20 km of fiber. The results in this paper provide useful information for the design of spectrum-sliced WDM networks.

Abstract: A laboratory-simulated free-space optical link under various turbulence levels is implemented to propose and experimentally demonstrate the use of saturated optical amplifiers as a simple and efficient approach for suppression of scintillation due to atmospheric turbulence. The use of erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) or semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) requires the received signal be coupled into a fiber. The system performance of receiver structures employing a saturated EDFA and a SOA (in saturation and conversion modes) are measured and compared to that of fiberless direct detection (DD). It is shown that in higher turbulence levels, where no data transmission can be achieved by DD, remarkable eye opening results when using saturated amplifiers
