Abstract: PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched from January 1990 to December 2019 for English Language articles describing the composition and properties of prefabricated fiber-reinforced posts. First, the search strategy was established for Medline / PubMed using the following terms ((Fiber post[All Fields] OR (fiber reinforced post[All Fields] AND composition[All Fields] AND (“matrix”[MeSH Terms] OR (“fiber”[All Fields] AND “properties”[All Fields] AND “epoxy”[All Fields]) OR “dimethacrylate”[All Fields]) AND NOT (CAD CAM[All Fields])). The search strategy was then adapted for Scopus and Google Scholar databases to identify eligible studies.

Abstract: Glass fiber post based on the new polymeric material, polybenzoxazine, is prepared and the effects of glass fiber contents on mechanical and thermal properties are evaluated. The mechanical response to externally applied loads of tooth restored with glass fiber-reinforced polybenzoxazine composite posts is also simulated by finite element analysis of a tridimensional model and compared with the response to that of a natural tooth. The reinforcing of glass fiber can help improve the mechanical and thermal properties of the polybenzoxazine influenced by the interfacial adhesion between the glass fiber and polybenzoxazine matrix, except for the relatively high mechanical property of the glass fiber. The mechanical data, i.e., elastic modulus under flexure load or flexural modulus by three-point bending test of the glass fiber-reinforced polybenzoxazine composites are agreed with the elastic modulus of dentin and then used in the finite element model. The restoration using the glass fiber-reinforced polybenzoxazine composite post provided the maximum von Mises equivalent stress at the cervical third area of the endodontically treated tooth model as similarly observed in the natural tooth. In addition, the maximum von Mises equivalent stress of the tooth restored with the glass fiber-reinforced polybenzoxazine composite post is also quietly like that of the natural tooth. The finding of this work provided the essential properties of the glass fiber-reinforced polybenzoxazine composite for dental restorations and appliances.

Abstract: Thermoplastic resin fiber composites have an easy fabrication process, good mechanical properties, and compatible stiffness to tooth dentin. However, they have not yet attracted much interest in the field of dentistry. The current study was carried out to test a new proposed approach to manufacture a fiber reinforced composite endodontic post and evaluate its flexural strength through a two-point inclined loading test. The proposed fiber post manufacture approach depends upon a braiding technique of the glass fibers’ (GF) reinforcing component with thermoplastic polypropylene (PP) resin fibers that will later represent the resin matrix after thermal melting. Posts were made of different core (70%) and sheath (30%) construction (PP/GF ratios) using three different GF types and seizing pre-treatment to both fiber types. Two-point inclined loading test at 45 °C applied force angle was used to test the posts’ flexural strength. Fiber posts (1.6 mm in diameter) with pure GF (de-sized starch E-GF and pre-silanized S-GF) core, and sheath construction with higher PP/GF ratios, showed the significantly highest two-point bending strength (56.67 ± 4.89 and 53.96 ± 1.81 MPa, respectively), among experimental posts groups (except for the commercial control posts). However, posts with PP core type showed the lowest values (21.59 ± 1.86 and 16.54 ± 1.94 MPa for de-sized and E-glass sheath fibers, respectively). Based on these findings, the proposed approach was reliable in producing fiber-reinforced composite post with the desired dimensions and fiber distribution. Post construction with a pure GF core and higher PP/GF ratio showed considerably higher flexural strength and GF volume fraction comparable to commercial available post types.

Abstract: Abstract Biocopolymers based on vanillin/fufurylamine-biobenzoxazine (V-fa) and bioepoxy, epoxide castor oil (ECO), were prepared for fiber post application. The mechanical and thermal properties of the V-fa/ECO biocopolymers were assessed in regard to the influence of ECO contents. The addition of the ECO at amount of 20% by weight into the poly(V-fa) preserved the stiffness, the glass transition temperature and thermal stability nearly to the poly(V-fa). Dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to examine the curing kinetics of the V-fa/ECO system with different heating rates. In order to determine the activation energy ( E a ), the experimental data were subjected to the isoconversional approaches, namely Flynn-Wall-Ozawa and Friedman. The V-fa/ECO monomer mixture showed averaged E a values of 105 kJ/mol and 94 kJ/mol, corresponding to typical E a of petroleum-based benzoxazine/epoxy. The results derived using the curing reaction model and the experimental data were in good agreement, demonstrating the efficacy of the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa approach for determining the curing kinetics. The simulated mechanical response to external applied loads by finite element analysis of the tooth model restored with glass fiber-reinforced V-fa/ECO biocopolymer post showed a similar stress field with that restored with the commercial glass fiber post. Therefore, the biobased benzoxazine/epoxy copolymer overcomes many of the traditional shortcomings associated with petroleum-based epoxy resins used for dental fiber post, while demonstrating excellent mechanical and thermal properties.

Abstract: The quality and success of scholarly work depends in large measure on the quality of the literature review process. This paper advances conceptual understanding of the literature review process and extends earlier guidelines on literature reviews. It proposes a hermeneutic framework that integrates the analysis and interpretation of literature and the search for literature. This hermeneutic framework describes the literature review process as fundamentally a process of developing understanding that is iterative in nature. Using the hermeneutic circle it describes the literature review process as being constituted by literature searching, classifying and mapping, critical assessment, and argument development. The hermeneutic approach emphasizes continuous engagement with and gradual development of a body of literature during which increased understanding and insights are developed. The paper contributes to better understanding of the literature review process and provides guidelines to assist researchers in conducting high quality reviews. Approaches for efficient searching are included in an Appendix.

Abstract: The mandate of Human Reproduction Update involves several roles: (i) to provide a synthesis of evidence that can aid scientists and clinicians in their daily work; (ii) to help reproductive specialists understand concepts from related disciplines; and (iii) to summarize current knowledge generated by basic science as the foundation of future scientific and clinical advancement. Given that review and synthesis are central to good scientific and clinical practice, and that a grasp of the current state of knowledge is a prerequisite to designing new studies, it is pertinent to ask which reviews are most likely to fulfil the needs of readers. A related question concerns whether systematic reviews meet the needs of all review topics and all readers. Summarizing evidence or knowledge is a difficult problem in reproductive medicine, as in other branches of science and medical care (Eddy et al., 1992). For each question there may be multiple studies that use different designs and inclusion criteria. For clinical questions, the interventions, outcomes and measures of effect may vary: the effect measures in treatment studies include odds ratios, relative risks and absolute differences. For scientific questions, the experimental species, models and designs may differ. Moreover, it is always uncertain whether all of the relevant evidence has been evaluated. Even when the search has been exhaustive, there are no simple guides on how to interpret conflicting results and whether to accept apparently outlying studies. The choices that the reviewer makes to address the variable conditions and uncertainties may be conservative, strict and exclusive, or liberal, open and inclusive. The decisions made by the reviewer may not be consistent throughout and these choices may or may not satisfy the reader who seeks out the review to address a clinical or research question. Faced with uncertainty and doubt, readers nonetheless must form an impression of the evidence and synthesize the state of knowledge in order to address the clinical or research question that stimulated their interest in the review. We argue that the reader is better served when the choices made in the review, regardless of whether they are strict or open, should be explicit, transparent, clearly stated and reproducible by interested readers. This list of objectives for reviews is more easily satisfied by systematic reviews, which use explicit methods to methodically search, critically appraise and synthesize the available literature on a specific issue. The question or issue need not be clinical: indeed, the concept evolved primarily in psychology studies (Light and Pillemer, 1984). The systematic review attempts to reduce reviewer bias through the use of objective, reproducible criteria to select relevant individual publications and assess their validity. A systematic review may include a meta-analysis or statistical summary of the individual study results: the aggregate of effects from several studies yields an average treatment effect that is more precise than the individual study results (Schlesselman and Collins, 2003). Thus, the systematic review involves explicit, transparent methods which are clearly stated, and reproducible by others. Whether a systematic review of randomized controlled trials adheres to the guidelines can easily be evaluated by means of a widely used checklist (the QUORUM statement) (Moher et al., 1999). The strengths of the systematic review include the narrow focus of the question, the comprehensive search for evidence, the criterion-based selection of relevant evidence, the rigorous appraisal of validity, the objective or quantitative summary, and the evidence-based inferences (Cook et al., 1997). For some review topics, however, the strengths of the systematic review may turn into weaknesses. The primary problem is that the narrow focus and prescribed methods of the systematic review do not allow for comprehensive coverage. For example, the historical review is an irreplaceable means of tracing the development of a scientific principle or clinical concept, but the narrative thread could be lost in the strict rules of systematic review. As other examples, it would be burdensome to apply systematic methods to a survey on aneuploidy and fertility in the aging female or to an assessment of mouse knockout models and polycystic ovarian phenotype.
