TLDR
In this article, the authors reviewed the wetland wealth of India in terms of their geographic distribution and extent, ecosystem benefits they provide, and the various stresses they are exposed to, and discussed the efforts at management of these fragile ecosystems, identifies the institutional vacuum and suggests priority area where immediate attention is required in order to formulate better conservation strategies for these productive systems.

The economic value of wetlands in developing countries: a meta-regression analysis

TL;DR: This article presented the first comprehensive synthesis of economic valuations of wetlands in developing countries using Meta-regression analysis (MRA) and found that wetlands are a normal good, wetland size has a negative effect on wetland values, and urban wetlands and marine wetlands are more valuable than other wetlands.
Journal ArticleDOI

New policy directions for global pond conservation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose practical steps for the effective incorporation or enhancement of ponds within five policy areas: through open water sustainable urban drainage systems in urban planning, increased incentives in agrienvironment schemes, curriculum inclusion in education, emphasis on ecological scale in mitigation measures following anthropogenic developments, and the inclusion of pondscapes in conservation policy.

Urban expansion and wetland shrinkage estimation using a GIS-based model in the East Kolkata Wetland, India

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the eco-social transformation of the East Kolkata Wetland (EKW) and examined the patterns and drivers of wetland change in the EKW.
Journal ArticleDOI

Dynamic monitoring of the Poyang Lake wetland by integrating Landsat and MODIS observations

TL;DR: Wang et al. as mentioned in this paper proposed a spatiotemporal adaptive fusion model for NDVI products (STAFFN), to better blend highly resolved spatial and temporal information from multiple sensors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Wetland ecosystem services research: A critical review

TL;DR: A systematic literature review was conducted by collecting 1711 peer-reviewed articles through the Web of Science and ScienceDirect by searching the combined keywords “ecosystem service” OR “ECosystem services” and “wetland”.

Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States

TL;DR: The authors presented the most current methodology available for wetland classification and culminated a long-term effort involving many wetland scientists, which represented the most accurate methodology available in the literature.

Development and validation of a global database of lakes, reservoirs and wetlands

TL;DR: The Global Lakes and Wetlands Database (GLWD) as mentioned in this paper was created by combining the best available sources for lakes and wetlands on a global scale and the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) functionality enabled the generation of a database which focuses in three coordinated levels on (1) large lakes and reservoirs, (2) smaller water bodies, and (3) wetlands.

What are Ecosystem Services? The Need for Standardized Environmental Accounting Units

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that the term "ecosystem services" is too ad hoc to be of practical use in welfare accounting and propose a definition, rooted in economic principles, of ecosystem service units.

Wetland resources : Status, trends, ecosystem services, and restorability

TL;DR: In this paper, an international treaty (the 1971 Ramsar Convention) has helped 144 nations protect the most significant remaining wetlands in the world, and restoration techniques are improving, although the recovery of lost biodiversity is challenged by invasive species which thrive under disturbance and displace natives.
