TL;DR: A novel computational architecture for sports commentary generation based on analyses of professional broadcast commentary is presented, a first step towards realising a computational model of real-time sports commentary which explicitly incorporates dramatic narrative devices in the form of dramatic structure, themes and texturing.
Abstract: This paper looks at the current state of the art of academic sports commentary generation systems. It then summarises work on how drama is created in professional broadcast commentary using dramatic devices. A novel computational architecture for sports commentary generation based on analyses of professional broadcast commentary is then presented. This work presents a first step towards realising a computational model of real-time sports commentary which explicitly incorporates dramatic narrative devices in the form of dramatic structure, themes and texturing.

TL;DR: In this paper, the grammatical characteristics of narrative discourse mode and their implications for a linguistic theory of narration have been investigated, and three central questions within the intersection between narrative micro- and macro-structures, namely the definition of narrativity, the status of the narrator, and the relation between narration and fictionality are discussed.
Abstract: Abstract Is there a ‚narrative syntax‘, i. e. a special grammar restricted to narrative fiction? Starting from this question which has been investigated since early structuralism, the paper focusses on grammatical characteristics of narrative discourse mode and their implications for a linguistic theory of narration. Its goal is two-fold: In a first step, the traditional accounts by Benveniste, Hamburger, Kuroda and recent typological studies are brought together in order to support the claim that the distinction between narrative and non-narrative discourse mode is a fundamental one that has consequences for the use of grammar. In a second step, I discuss three central questions within the intersection between narrative micro- and macro-structures, namely (i) the definition of narrativity, (ii) the status of the narrator, and (iii) the relation between narration and fictionality. In sum, the article argues that investigations on the ‘grammar of narration’ do not just offer insights into a specific text configuration next to others, but are deeply linked to fundamental theoretical questions concerning the architecture of language – and that the comparison between linguistic and narratological categories offers a potential for addressing them.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors delineate various definitions of unnatural narratives and discuss unnaturalness, interpretative strategies, heuristic values, and the interrelations between unnatural narratology and other schools of narratological thought.
Abstract: Abstract Taking anti-mimetic narratives as its primary object of investigation, unnatural narratology aspires to establish its status as a discipline of unnatural poetics. In recent years, it has rapidly developed into one of the most prominent sub-branches of postclassical narratology, standing in direct parallel to feminist narratology, rhetorical narratology, and cognitive narratology. This paper begins by delineating various definitions of unnatural narrative and proceeds to discuss unnaturalness, interpretative strategies, heuristic values, and the interrelations between unnatural narratology and other schools of narratological thought, so as to investigate the core issues of unnatural narratology and the critical debates on it. The paper ends with an outline set of directions for future explorations in this field.
