TL;DR: A computational method for generating flashback and foreshadowing, specifically targeted at the evocation of surprise in the reader's mind, focuses on surprise as a cognitive response rather than as an emotional response.
Abstract: This paper describes work currently in progress to develop a computational method for generating flashback and foreshadowing, specifically targeted at the evocation of surprise in the reader's mind. Flashback provides a backstory to explain what caused the surprise outcome. Foreshadowing provides an implicit hint about the surprise. Our study focuses on surprise as a cognitive response rather than as an emotional response. The reader's story construction process is simulated by a plan-based reader model that checks unexpectedness and postdictability of the surprise.

TL;DR: The authors brought together two sets of theories from Narrative Theory and Retranslation Theory under the headings of Essence, Social Conditioning, and Interpretation to evaluate how well the theories regarding narrative versions and retranslations hold up with respect to a study of data.
Abstract: In the paper I bring together two sets of theories from Narrative Theory and from Retranslation Theory. Links and similarities between the theories are examined under the headings of Essence, Social Conditioning, and Interpretation. A post-structuralist narrative theory is presented, and I extrapolate from this to propose a post-structuralist retranslation theory. After the theoretical discussion I report on the study of a corpus comprising Zola's novel Nana and its five major British (re)translations. The aim is to evaluate how well the theories regarding narrative versions and retranslations hold up with respect to a study of data. A conclusion is reached as to which theories best explain the data. The paper concludes too that bringing together sets of theories from different but related disciplines can be productive in conceptualizing translational phenomena, in this case the phenomenon of retranslation.

TL;DR: The article considers the stages, styles, genres, contexts, and selves of self-storying under spiritual aspects of aging, and the topics of meaning and identity are explored.
Abstract: Narrative approaches in the field of aging are receiving increasing attention by theorists and practitioners alike. This article draws on recent thinking in narrative gerontology to look at three aspects of aging on which a narrative perspective can shed further light. In relation to the temporal aspects, the notion of storytime is examined. Concerning its poetical aspects, the article considers the stages, styles, genres, contexts, and selves of self-storying. Under spiritual aspects, the topics of meaning and identity are explored. A discussion of these aspects may be seen to converge on the theme of wisdom and the possibility of wisdom environments.

  • ...Such inequities between actual occurrences and s sequent recollections—or between what could called our outside story and our inside story (Rand 1995)—parallel similar discrepancies at work in what literary theorists refer to as “discourse-time” (Chatman, 1978, p. 62)....

TL;DR: Initial findings from an empirical study of the cognition employed by performers in improvisational theatre are presented, based on initial analysis of the data and details of interest are highlighted.
Abstract: This paper presents preliminary findings from our empirical study of the cognition employed by performers in improvisational theatre. Our study has been conducted in a laboratory setting with local improvisers. Participants performed predesigned improv "games", which were videotaped and shown to each individual participant for a retrospective protocol collection. The participants were then shown the video again as a group to elicit data on group dynamics, misunderstandings, etc. This paper presents our initial findings that we have built based on our initial analysis of the data and highlights details of interest.
