Abstract: This study is concerned with how impact from research and innovation (R&I) programmes is accounted for in impact evaluation reports. Establishing causal links between a research funding instrument and different effects, poses well known methodological difficulties. In the light of such challenges, textual accounts about causal links ought to be carefully written. Nevertheless, impact evaluation reports have a tendency towards unwarranted simplification as far as impact inferences are concerned. In this study, we illustrate how such simplifications–versions of the narrative device ellipsis–are accomplished. Using examples from three Swedish impact evaluation reports, we focus on the constituent components of longer impact accounts, that of the impact argument, to analyze the various ways that impact is narratively achieved through simplification. We believe this analysis can contribute to the methodology of impact evaluation, as well as spread light on some the difficulties in the historiography of innovation in general. (Less)

Abstract: Story understanding requires a degree of knowledge and expressiveness beyond the current state of natural language understanding. We present an approach that addresses these needs, using a large-scale knowledge base, simplified English grammar and a combination of compositional frame semantics and abductive reasoning. This in turn raises a significant challenge disambiguating complex semantic structures, which requires a pragmatics of narrative for constraint and guidance. We present a theory of narrative functions that serve as a heuristic for relevance in narrative, and provide evidence that this heuristic is effective for disambiguation that leads to consistent understanding.

Abstract: The UN summit on climate change in Durban constituted an important moment in the con - tinuous discourse on how to understand climate change and the framing of the problems and solutions. A new emergent frame of understanding could be detected in the press, which the author calls the ‘out-dated worldview’ frame. This frame contains a critique of the clear-cut division between developing vs. developed countries from the 1992 Rio Convention, and may influence how we understand burden-sharing roles in a new global climate deal. In an eager attempt to include all major polluters within a new climate regime, there is a danger that the principle of ‘common but differentiated responsibility’ will be ignored, which may be an attempt to excuse the rich industrialized countries from their responsibility after 150 years of benefitting from fossil-fuel-driven development.

Abstract: The extended practicum is a crucial learning experience for pre-service teachers. This study examines how pre-service teachers learn about teaching within the context of the extended practicum. Narrative methodology was chosen as an appropriate means to explore and interpret the beliefs and experiences of pre-service teachers for a wider audience while still preserving their voices. The pre-service teachers and I had a common agenda: to improve the experience of future preservice teachers on their extended practicum. Our approach to this differed. I wanted to focus on the pre-service teachers' learning about teaching so that future pre-service teachers could improve their learning. The pre-service teachers' narratives focused on other factors which were impacting on them so that the Faculty of Education could improve their programme. Both sets of factors have been included. The key themes which emerged, learning from critical incidents, the impact of the assessment and the baggage we carry have been amplified through the narratives of the pre-service teachers.
