Ferroelectric smectic C (FSC) liquid crystals are used in a simple new geometry that allows the spontaneous formation of either of two surface-stabilized smective C monodomains of opposite ferroelectric polarization as discussed by the authors.
Abstract
Ferroelectric smectic C (FSC) liquid crystals are used in a simple new geometry that allows the spontaneous formation of either of two surface‐stabilized smectic C monodomains of opposite ferroelectric polarization. These domains are separated by well‐defined walls which may be manipulated with an applied electric field. The resulting electro‐optic effects exhibit a unique combination of properties: microsecond dynamics, threshold behavior, symmetric bistability, and a large electro‐optic response.

Spontaneous formation of macroscopic chiral domains in a fluid smectic phase of achiral molecules

TL;DR: A smectic liquid-crystal phase made from achiral molecules with bent cores was found to have fluid layers that exhibit two spontaneous symmetry-breaking instabilities: polar molecular orientational ordering about the layer normal and molecular tilt.

Surface effects and anchoring in liquid crystals

TL;DR: In this paper, a review focusing on nematic liquid crystals is presented, where three main kinds of effects can be distinguished: the perturbation of the liquid crystalline structure close to the surface, the bulk liquid crystal structure is recovered with an orientation which is fixed by the surface and critical adsorption or wetting can occur at surfaces.

Antiferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystals

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors have suggested the pair formation of transverse dipole moments in adjacent smectic layers as the cause of antiferroelectricity in liquid crystals.

Ferroelectric and Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystals

TL;DR: In this article, surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystals were described, which caused a surge in industrial interest because of their promising electro-optical applications, in particular for high-resolution liquid crystal displays.

Ferroelectric liquid crystals

TL;DR: In this paper, a general symmetry argument is presented, and experiments on newly synthesized p-decyloxybenzylidene p'-amino 2-methyl butyl cinnamate are described, demonstrating that chiral smectic C and H liquid crystals are ferroelectric.

Ferroelectric liquid crystals

TL;DR: In this article, the authors defined the following conditions for a Ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture containing at least one compound of the general formula I: if n is 0 or 1, X is a single covalent bond and X has a C-C double bond, then R and R are each as defined in Claim 1, at least R having a double bond.

Direct electrical measurement of the permanent polarization of a ferroelectric chiral smectic C liquid crystal

TL;DR: In this paper, a sample of p-Hexyl-Oxy-Benzylidne-p'-Amino-2-Chloro-Propyle-Cinnamate, Chiral liquid crystal, is oriented in the ferroelectric smectic C-phase by a square wave field ± E; its permanent polarization orients itself from + P to 2014 P in a time adjustable with E. This time is chosen to obtain an induced transient current, due to the polarization variation, distinguishable from the charge and conduction currents in the sample.
