TL;DR: In this article, a new azodye ligand (H2L) and its relative Cr(III, Mn(II), Fe(III), Co(II) and Cd(II)-nanosized complexes were prepared.
Abstract: New azodye ligand (H2L) and its relative Cr(III)-, Mn(II)-, Fe(III)-, Co(II)-, Ni(II)-, Cu(II)-, Zn(II)- and Cd(II)-nanosized complexes were prepared. A new synthesized compounds were characterized using spectral (mass, IR, UV–Vis, XRD, and ESR) and analytical (elemental, molar conductance, thermal and magnetic moment measurements) tools. Infrared spectra showed that the ligand behaves as a monobasic bidentate, coordinating with central atoms through carbonyl oxygen and α-hydroxyl group. The geometrical structures of Cr(III) and Fe(III) complexes were found to be in octahedral configuration, whereas Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes have tetrahedral forms. XRD patterns reflect an amorphous appearance of all investigated complexes. TEM images showed nanosized particles and identical distribution over the complex surface. Molecular modeling for the drug ligand and its metal ion complexes were performed using Gaussian09 program to assert on their structural formulae. Some essential parameters were extracted using HOMO and LUMO energies. AutoDock tools 4.2 was used to simulate the interaction process with infected cell proteins to expect the experimental pathway. The inhibition activity of drug ligand and its metal ion complexes was evaluated towards different types of bacteria and fungi through in vitro antimicrobial activities. The antitumor activities of all compounds are straightened towards human liver carcinoma (HEPG2) cell lines. Fe(III) and Co(II) complexes exhibited IC50 of 2.90 and 4.23 µg mL−1, respectively, which means they are more potent anticancer drug than the standard (doxorubicin, IC50 = 4.73 µg mL−1). Therefore, the two complexes may consider promising anticancer drugs.

TL;DR: The in vitro antitumor activity of the synthesized ligand and some selected complexes against human breast and human hepatocarcinoma cell lines and the activity data show that most of the tested compounds exhibit remarkable antibacterial activity against these organisms.
Abstract: Novel penta-azamacrocyclic 21-membered [N5] ligand [L] and its transition metal complexes with Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Ru(III) and Pd(II) have been isolated and characterized. The mode of bonding and overall geometry of the complexes have been inferred through IR, MS, UV–Vis, EPR, 1H NMR spectral studies, molar conductivity, magnetic, thermal and microanalyses, On the basis of above studies, an octahedral geometry has been proposed for all complexes except Pd(II) chloride complex which adopt square planar geometry. The in vitro antitumor activity of the synthesized ligand and some selected complexes against human breast and human hepatocarcinoma cell lines (MCF-7) and (HePG2), respectively has been studied. The results show that the tested compounds are potent antitumor agents. Also the ligand and some selected complexes have been tested for their inhibitory effect on the growth of bacteria: Streptococcus pyogenes as Gram-positive bacteria and Escherichia coli as Gram-negative bacteria. The activity data show that most of the tested compounds exhibit remarkable antibacterial activity against these organisms.

TL;DR: In this article, a thermocouple is used to measure the sample temperature in a Stanton HT-D thermobalance, the bead of which is positioned in or near the sample, depending on crucible design.
Abstract: THE use of thermogravimetric data to evaluate kinetic parameters of solid-state reactions involving weight loss (or gain) has been investigated by a number of workers1–4. Freeman and Carroll2 have stated some of the advantages of this method over conventional isothermal studies. To these reasons may be added the advantage of using one single sample for investigation. However, the importance of procedural details, such as crucible geometry, heating rate, pre-history of sample, and particle size, on the parameters has yet to be fully investigated. It is also necessary to ensure accurate temperature measurement, both for precision and also to detect any departure from a linear heating rate due to endo- or exo-thermic reactions. (The effect of these may be largely eliminated by the use of small samples.) In our present work (using a Stanton HT–D thermobalance) the sample temperature is measured directly by means of a thermocouple the bead of which is positioned in or near the sample, depending on crucible design, the wires of which run down a twin-bore rise rod. The connexion between the end of the thermocouple wires on the balance arm and the terminal block is made by 0.001 in. platinum and platinum/rhodium wires5. It has been shown that these wires do not affect the performance of the balance but act merely as a subsidiary damping. From the terminal block compensated cable leads to the cold junction and a potentiometric arrangement for direct measurement of the thermocouple output.
