Taking the challenge of multiple access for third-generation cellular mobile radio systems-a European view

Abstract: In Europe, the challenge of the design of third-generation cellular mobile radio systems has been taken numerous research and development activities in this field have been started. The authors try to give an overview of the European activities in this field. The article is organized in two parts. In the first part, the requirements for third-generation cellular mobile radio systems such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunications System (FPLMTS), which has been named International Mobile Telecommunications after the year 2000 (IMT-2000) are presented concisely. Also, the importance and challenge of the multiple access design for such third-generation cellular mobile radio systems is explained. In the second part, numerous European research activities with focus on the multiple access design for third-generation cellular mobile radio systems are reviewed.

Abstract: The demand for wireless mobile communications services is growing at an explosive rate, with the anticipation that communication to a mobile device anywhere on the globe at all times will be available in the near future. An array of antennas mounted on vehicles, ships, aircraft, satellites, and base stations is expected to play an important role in fulfilling the increased demand of channel requirement for these services, as well as for the realization of the dream that a portable communications device the size of a wristwatch be available at an affordable cost for such services. This paper is the first of a two-part study. It provides a comprehensive treatment, at a level appropriate to nonspecialists, of the use of an antenna array to enhance the efficiency of mobile communications systems. It presents an overview of mobile communications as well as details of how an array may be used in various mobile communications systems, including land-mobile, indoor-radio, and satellite-based systems. It discusses advantages of an array of antennas in a mobile communications system, highlights improvements that are possible by using multiple antennas compared to a single antenna in a system, and provides details on the feasibility of antenna arrays for mobile communications applications.

Abstract: This paper focuses on a CDMA design study for future third-generation mobile and personal communication systems such as FPLMTS and UMTS. In the design study, a rigorous top down approach is adopted starting from the most essential objectives and requirements of universal third-generation mobile systems. Emphasis is laid on high flexibility with respect to the implementation of a wide range of services and service bit rates including variable rate and packet services. Flexibility in frequency and radio resource management, system and service deployment, and easy operation in mixed-cell and multioperator scenarios are further important design goals. The system concept under investigation is centered around an open and flexible radio interface architecture based on asynchronous direct-sequence CDMA with three different chip rates of approximately 1,5, and 20 Mchip/s

In one embodiment, a transmitter comprises a baseband processor structured to receive data and to convert the data into a multiplicity of high and low signal values, with each high and low signal value having a first timing interval. A local oscillator generates a clock signal at a second timing interval and a digital circuit combines the high and low signal values with the clock signal to produce a transmission signal directly at a transmission frequency. A receiver is configured to receive the signal. Abstract: This paper deals with the performance evaluation of various resource management strategies that are suitable for low Earth orbit mobile satellite systems (LEO-MSSs). A user mobility model has been proposed and its statistical parameters have been derived. Both fixed channel allocation (FCA) and dynamic channel allocation (DCA) techniques have been considered. Moreover, in order to reduce the handover failure probability, we have assumed that interbeam handover requests which do not immediately obtain service can be queued. In particular, two different queuing disciplines have been compared: (a) the first input first output (FIFO) scheme and (b) a new technique called last useful instant (LUI) which is based on the knowledge of the maximum time within which the handover procedure must be accomplished. Implementation aspects for the LUI technique in a LEO-MSS have been discussed also in comparison with the measurement-based priority scheme (MBPS), previously proposed in the literature on this subject. The efficiency of the LUI queuing scheme as regards the FIFO technique has been investigated by simulations for both DCA and FCA techniques. An analytical approach has been also presented in order to allow the performance evaluation of the FCA scheme with different handover queuing disciplines.

Abstract: Source and channel coding have been treated separately in most cases. It can be observed that most source coding algorithms for voice, audio and images still have correlation in certain bits. Transmission errors in these bits usually account for the significant errors in the reconstructed source signal. This paper proposes a modification of the Viterbi decoding algorithm (VA) for binary trellises which uses a priori or a posteriori information about the source bit probability for better decoding in addition to soft inputs and channel state information. Analytical upper bounds for the BER of convolutional codes for this modified VA (APRI-VA) are given. The algorithm is combined with the soft output viterbi algorithm (SOVA) and an estimator for the residual correlation of the source bits to achieve source-controlled channel decoding for framed source bits. The description is simplified by an algebra for the log-likelihood ratio L(u)=log(P(u=+1)/P(u=-1)) which allows a clear definition of the "soft" values of source-, channel-, and decoded bits as well as a simplified description of the traceback version of the SOVA. Applications are given for PCM transmission and the full rate GSM speech codec. For an PCM coded oversampled bandlimited Gaussian source transmitted over Gaussian and Rayleigh channels with convolutional codes the decoding errors are reduced by a factor of 4 to 5 when the APRI-SOVA is used instead of the VA. A simple dynamic Markov correlation estimator is used. With these receiver-only modifications the channel SNR in a bad mobile environment can be lowered by 2 to 4 dB resulting in the same voice quality. Further applications are briefly discussed. >

Flexibility in frequency and radio resource management, system and service deployment, and easy operation in mixed-cell and multioperator scenarios are further important design goals. The system concept under investigation is centered around an open and flexible radio interface architecture based on asynchronous direct-sequence CDMA with three different chip rates of approximately 1, 5, and 20 Mchip/s. The presented CDMA system concept forms the basis for an experimental test system (testbed) which is currently under development. This experimental system concept has been jointly established by the partners in the European RACE project R2020 (CODIT). The paper describes the radio transmission scheme and appropriate receiver principles and presents first performance results based on simulations. >

Abstract: Recent trends in digital communications are opening commercial applications to code division multiple access (CDMA). A novel access technique based on bandlimited quasi-synchronous CDMA (BLQS-CDMA) is described, showing all the advantages of synchronizing conventional direct sequence CDMA to drastically reduce the effect of self-noise. Bandlimitation is achieved with no detection loss by means of Nyquist chip shaping, leading to a simple all-digital demodulator structure. Detection losses due to imperfect carrier frequency and chip timing synchronization are analytically derived and numerical results are checked by computer simulations. Impairments due to satellite transponder distortions are evaluated. The full digital modem structure is presented, together with possible applications to mobile and very small aperture terminal (VSAT) satellite communications. >
