Abstract: The Uniformitarian Principle (UP), sometimes also referred to as the Principle of Uniformity, very simply claims that the processes which we observe in the present can help us to gain knowledge about processes in the past. The reasoning behind this is that we must assume that whatever happens today must also have been possible in the past; whatever is impossible today must have been impossible in the past. If we observe today that water (on earth...) boils at around 100 degrees Celsius, we can assume that it also did so at any given point in the past. This means that when we analyze a historical phenomenon we should first look at known causes in order to explain it, before we turn to unknown causes. This principle, which originated in the natural sciences, has also been applied in the humanities (and in linguistics) when looking at historical developments. In the humanities, however, the Uniformitarian Principle must be taken with a pinch of salt since there is no clear and simple correlate to the laws of nature. The aim of this chapter is to evaluate critically the usefulness of the Uniformitarian Principle in historical linguistics in general, and in historical sociolinguistics in particular. To this end, I will first discuss the history of this principle in linguistics and its traditional uses in historical linguistics. Abstract: L’agir professoral fait l’objet de recherches approfondies en didactiques des langues et des cultures. Si la multimodalite est consideree comme un element definitoire de cette notion, peu d’etudes se sont penchees en detail sur la comprehension de cet aspect de l’action enseignante. Notre travail, mene dans une approche ethnographique, vise a analyser la pratique multimodale de deux enseignantes. Chacune intervient dans deux contextes pedagogiques : en cours de francais langue premiere (FL1) et aupres de collegiens allophones apprenant le francais langue seconde (FLS). Cela nous offre l’occasion d’etudier l’effet du contexte d’enseignement sur les actions professorales, en particulier celles mises en oeuvre dans la construction de normes scolaires (linguistique et interactionnelle). Ce travail vise egalement a analyser le style professoral de ces enseignantes pour mettre au jour les invariants pedagogiques, d’un contexte a l’autre, dans la gestion de ces normes. Cette recherche s’appuie essentiellement sur l’observation et l’analyse de deux types de corpus : des films de classe, transcrits et annotes a l’aide du logiciel ELAN, et trois differents formats de corpus videoscopiques (autoscopie, heteroscopie et autoheteroscopie). Les procedes de normalisation linguistique et interactionnelle sont apprehendes en croisant une analyse quantitative des productions verbales et gestuelles et une analyse qualitative, qui emprunte des outils a la linguistique enonciative, a l’analyse des discours et a l’analyse conversationnelle, ou encore a la microsociologie.

Abstract: Abstract This paper discusses the role that culture plays in the configuration of one of the most crucial meaning mechanisms in cognitive linguistics, namely conceptual metaphors, which are defined as mappings between two different conceptual domains. These mappings are embodied, that is, grounded in our sensorimotor, cultural, and social experience of the world around us. This paper argues that culture is a key concept for the explanation of how conceptual metaphors emerge from our knowledge structures. It proposes the need of a culture sieve that manipulates culture elements in two ways. On the one hand, it “filters” those elements that are in accordance with the premises of a given culture, and on the other, it “impregnates” the mapping with touches of a culture in contrast with other cultural and social systems. The paper is divided in two main parts: First, an overview of the relationship between metaphor, embodiment and culture in cognitive linguistics is provided. Second, the importance of the culture sieve is illustrated with two case studies from two popular conceptual domains in metaphor studies: perception and body-parts.
