The Archaeology of Ethnicity: Constructing Identities in the Past and Present

01 Jan 1997-
TL;DR: Sian Jones as mentioned in this paper argues for a fundamentally different view of ethnicity, as a complex dynamic form of identification, requiring radical changes in archaeological analysis and interpretation, and presents a comprehensive and critical synthesis of recent theories of ethnicity in the human sciences.
Abstract: The question of ethnicity is highly controversial in contemporary archaeology. Indigenous and nationalist claims to territory, often rely on reconstructions of the past based on the traditional identification of 'cultures' from archaeological remains. Sian Jones responds to the need for a reassessment of the ways in which social groups are identified in the archaeological record, with a comprehensive and critical synthesis of recent theories of ethnicity in the human sciences. In doing so, she argues for a fundamentally different view of ethnicity, as a complex dynamic form of identification, requiring radical changes in archaeological analysis and interpretation.

TL;DR: A brief review of the main research directions and issues in the archaeology of identity can be found in this paper, where the components of identity are defined as the statuses and roles that determine the individual's relation to, and membership in, a community as well as to other individuals.
Abstract: This study offers a brief review of the main research directions and issues in the archaeology of identity. Discussed here are the components of identity – meaning the statuses and roles that determine the individual’s relation to, and membership in, a community as well as to other individuals, which are essentially the elements of social cohesion and social organisation – and its formation as well as the various options for categorisation and the modes of display through cultural memory and material culture.

TL;DR: This volume emerges from a Table ronde organised by the two editors at the University of Caen in 2007 as discussed by the authors, with C. Briand-Ponsart crediting his co-editor, the late Y. Modéran, as being the inspiration behind the session.
Abstract: This volume emerges from a Table ronde organised by the two editors at the University of Caen in 2007. With C. Briand-Ponsart crediting his co-editor, the late Y. Modéran, as being the inspiration behind the session, the book now serves as a sort of valediction following Modéran’s tragically premature demise.1 Modéran himself is certainly a powerful presence in the published proceedings, contributing a lengthy introduction (9-40) and a substantial chapter on the afterlife of the Roman provinces in the Vandal era (241-70).

TL;DR: In this article, a brief summary of agency and identity in Araucanian/Che culture is given, as well as an explanation of the Adaptive Cycle and Panarchy in Resilience Theory.
Abstract: This chapter lays out the fundamental theoretical background to the research. I begin with a brief summation of agency and identity, as they are essential to understanding Araucanian/Che culture. Agency and identity transition into Resilience Theory, its definition and concepts, as well as an explanation of the Adaptive Cycle and Panarchy. The theory is grounded in an emphasis on long-term cultural developments, the processes that go into that development, and the political, economic, social, and ideological structures that form the basis for culture.

TL;DR: In this article, a revision historiografica of the arqueologia patagonica is presented, with the goal of comprender the relation between diversidad, arqueology, and contexto politico.
