TLDR
Testosterone, 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone, estrone and estradiol-17beta were measured by radioimmunoassay and corticosterone by a competitive protein-binding technique and Plasma-steroid levels of eight avian species are presented and compared with those found by other investigators.

Seasonal changes of the adrenocortical response to stress in birds of the Sonoran Desert.

TL;DR: Analysis of plasma levels from black-throated sparrows, cactus wrens, and curve-billed thrashers indicated that at least some birds breeding in the open desert with restricted access to water are able to suppress the classical adrenocortical response to stress, and it is possible that this stress modulation may allow breeding to continue despite severe heat.

Hormones and life histories: an integrative approach.

TL;DR: The results to date appear to indicate that selection is relatively indifferent to a broad range of phenotypes, while extreme deviations from the norm are selected against.
Journal ArticleDOI

Dynamics of food availability, body condition and physiological stress response in breeding Black‐legged Kittiwakes

TL;DR: The results suggest that, in addition to a seasonal change in bird physiology during reproduction, local ecological factors such as food availability affect circulating levels of corticosterone and adrenal response to acute stress.
Journal ArticleDOI

Maternal corticosterone is transferred to avian yolk and may alter offspring growth and adult phenotype.

TL;DR: The results suggest that stress experienced by a laying bird has significant effects on offspring development and adult phenotype, possibly mediated by the transfer of maternal corticosterone to yolk.
Journal ArticleDOI

Interactions of corticosterone with feeding, activity and metabolism in passerine birds

TL;DR: In White-crowned Sparrows, exogenous B substantially reduced overnight metabolic expenditure by reducing the frequency and amplitude of arousal bouts during the night and, possibly, insurance that the individual will retain sufficient resources to seek food the following day.

Radioimmunoassay of plasma estrogens

TL;DR: A sensitive radioimmunoassay for free plasma estrone, estradiol, and estriol has been developed and was produced in sheep immunized with Estradiol-17β, 17-hemisuccinate-bovine-serum-albumin and Sephadex LH-20 to correct for procedural losses.

A comparative study of the conversion of testosterone to 17-beta-hydroxy-5-alpha-androstan-3-one (Dihydrotestosterone) by prostate and epididymis.

TL;DR: Dihydrotestosterone formation was measurable in all of the immature prostates studied, including that from calf, and in a variety of other tissues known to be under androgenic control—duck preen gland, the comb and wattle of the chicken, and the preputial gland of rat and mouse.

Radioimmunoassay method for six steroids in human plasma

TL;DR: Specificity studies carried out with 57 steroids, in conjunction with the accuracy experiments, indicate that a very high degree of specificity has been achieved and one possible exception may be the assay of 3β-hydroxy-5-pregnen-20-one.

A Radio-ligand Binding Assay System for Estradiol Measurement in Human Plasma

TL;DR: A new, convenient, specific, sensitive, reproducible radio-ligand binding assay system for measurement of estradiol in human plasma has been developed and compares the ability of standards and unknowns to compete for binding sites on the specific estrogen binding protein of rabbit uterine cytosol.
