TLDR
In order to understand the combustion characteristics of crude oil pool fires, an experimental study was carried out at the Fire Research Institute (FRI) large scale test facility as mentioned in this paper, where the radiative output, burning rate, and the concentrations of CO, CO2, and smoke (above the flame tip) were measured during the burning of Arabian light crude oil, heptane, toluene, and kerosene floating on water.Abstract:
In order to understand the combustion characteristics of crude oil pool fires, an experimental study was carried out at the Fire Research Institute (FRI) large scale test facility. The radiative output, burning rate, and the concentrations of CO, CO2, and smoke (above the flame tip) were measured during the burning of Arabian light crude oil, heptane, toluene, and kerosene floating on water. The effect of scale was studied by using steel pans ranging from 0.6 to 3 meters in diameter.read more

Fire Hazard Calculations for Large, Open Hydrocarbon Fires
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present detailed techniques for calculating impacts from large open hydrocarbon fires, including pool fires, jet flames, vapor cloud fires, or fireballs, all of which behave differently and exhibit markedly different radiation characteristics.

A Study of Boilover in Liquid Pool Fires Supported on Water Part I: Effects of a Water Sublayer on Pool Fires
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of a boiling water sublayer on the behavior of pool fires was investigated, where the burning surface of the fuel can be fed into the flame so that the fuel/water interface with respect to the edge of the container remains fixed.

A study of the burning of a slick of crude oil on water

TL;DR: A simple model of oil slick burning is presented in this paper, which predicts the minimum thickness for ignition, the unburned residue, the burning time, and the effect of wind on all three quantities.
