TL;DR: In this paper, a case study was conducted in a successful school in northern Malaysia using a combination of case study methods and grounded theory, employing a semi-structured interview protocol derived from the one used in several studies conducted under the International Successful School Principal ship Project.
Abstract: The study of context-based leadership practices has gained currency during the last decadeThis study aims to complement the recent efforts of researchers in identifying the context-based leadership practices of successful school leaders, and deliberating how these practices are enacted within their own unique contextsAn in-depth case study was conducted in a successful school in northern Malaysia using a combination of case study methods and grounded theory Case study methods were used for data collection from multiple sources, employing a semi-structured interview protocol derived from the one used in several studies conducted under the International Successful School Principal ship ProjectThe findings of the case study reveal that strong interpersonal skills, people-centered leadership, clear communication of vision and goal, focus on academic achievement, co-curricular activities, developing people and creating a positive work environment are all vital constituents of successful leadershipThe findings will attempt to add to the scant literature on context-based leadership practices from MalaysiaImplications for practice can be drawn for policymakers, who must resist over-reliance on borrowed leadership models, while practitioners need to prioritize their practices based upon the contextual requirements to succeed

TL;DR: In this paper, a theory-based model predicting teachers' leadership competencies and its relationship with principals' developmental leadership behavior and teachers' commitment to change was developed to test the relationship between teachers' and principal's developmental leadership behaviour.
Abstract: Leading change from the classroom is closely linked with the development of teacher leaders. It is considered to be the significant outcome of teachers’ commitment to change their ordinary role as classroom instructional leaders to school-based teacher leaders. In this regard, it is a privilege for teacher leaders to walk with principals who portray developmental leadership behavior competently. Thus, the objective of this study is to test a theory-based model predicting teachers’ leadership competencies and its relationship with principals’ developmental leadership behavior and teachers’ commitment to change. Data was collected from 928 respondents who served in 58 high performing secondary schools in Malaysia. Structural Equation Modeling was utilized to test the model developed. The results indicate that the teachers’ leadership competencies have significant relationship with principals’ developmental leadership behavior and teachers’ commitment to change. In addition, principals’ developmental leadership behavior was found to mediate the relationship between teachers’ leadership competencies and teachers’ commitment to change.

TL;DR: In this article, a qualitative study was conducted to identify instructional leadership practices among the headmaster in selected high performing primary schools around Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Abstract: Instructional leadership is about actions carried out by school leaders such as headmaster or school principal to improve the quality of teachers’ instruction and improve students’ learning outcomes. This qualitative study was conducted to identify instructional leadership practices among the headmaster in selected High Performing Schools around Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur. This study used the interview method for data collection. Participants for the interviews were six headmasters of the high performing primary school who have 5 to 20 years of experiences in the field of education. The results show headmasters in High Performing Schools in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur practicing the five dimensions of instructional leadership in improving school climate, which are protect instructional time, provide incentives to students, provide incentives to teachers, promote professional development and maintain high visibility at school. The results also indicate that the instructional leadership practices of the headmaster in High Performing Schools focusing on the professional development to ensure teachers’ instructional competency is at the high level. Consequently, teacher professional development program should be emphasized in a leadership training program for school leaders to increase their capacity as effective instructional leaders by assisting teachers to improve teaching and learning activities in schools.

Abstract: This article provides an overview of the literature concerning successful school leadership. It draws on the international literature and is derived from a more extensive review of the literature completed in the early stage of the authors’ project. The prime purpose of this review is to summarise the main findings from the wealth of empirical studies undertaken in the leadership field.

TL;DR: This article reviewed the empirical literature on the relationship between the principal's role and school effectiveness during the period from 1980 to 1995 and specifically focused on the conceptual underpinnings of several theoretical models to study the role, relationship between models and methods of investigation, an4 consequently, to what has been learned about the nature of the principal impact.
Abstract: Although the is little disagreement conquering the belief that principals have an impact on the lives of teachers and students, both the nature and degree of this effect continues to be open to debate. The relationship is complex and not easily subject to empirical verification. This article reviews the empirical literature on the relationship between the principal's role and school effectiveness during the period from 1980 to 1995. We specifically focus on the conceptual underpinnings of several theoretical models to study the role, the relationship between models and methods of investigation, an4 consequently, to what has been learned about the nature of the principal impact. We conclude by framing a possible research agenda for the next generation of studies on the effects of school administration.

Abstract: Despite citation counts from Google Scholar (GS), Web of Science (WoS), and Scopus being widely consulted by researchers and sometimes used in research evaluations, there is no recent or systematic evidence about the differences between them. In response, this paper investigates 2,448,055 citations to 2,299 English-language highly-cited documents from 252 GS subject categories published in 2006, comparing GS, the WoS Core Collection, and Scopus. GS consistently found the largest percentage of citations across all areas (93%-96%), far ahead of Scopus (35%-77%) and WoS (27%-73%). GS found nearly all the WoS (95%) and Scopus (92%) citations. Most citations found only by GS were from non-journal sources (48%-65%), including theses, books, conference papers, and unpublished materials. Many were non-English (19%-38%), and they tended to be much less cited than citing sources that were also in Scopus or WoS. Despite the many unique GS citing sources, Spearman correlations between citation counts in GS and WoS or Scopus are high (0.78-0.99). They are lower in the Humanities, and lower between GS and WoS than between GS and Scopus. The results suggest that in all areas GS citation data is essentially a superset of WoS and Scopus, with substantial extra coverage.
