Abstract: Germany is the largest economy in Europe and the leading renewable energy user comparable to none in the entire of the European continents. It is in reference to these developments that this study investigates whether the impacts of renewable energy have consolidated the economic growth prospects of the country. To ensure this, quarterly time series data from 1971Q1 to 2013QIV was used. The study employed the Clemente-Montanes-Reyes detrended structural break test, the Bayer-Hanck combined cointegration test and the ARDL bounds testing approach to cointegration. In addition, the causality analysis was observed using VECM Granger causality framework. The results confirmed the existence of cointegration among the variables. The results show that renewable energy consumption in Germany consolidates the country's economic growth prospects to the extend that a 1% increase in renewable energy consumption boosts German economic growth by 0.2194%. In addition to that, a 1% increase in capital lead to the rise in economic growth by 1.1320%. While a 0.5125% increase in economic growth is due to 1% increase in labor productivity. The causality analysis on the other hand, revealed the existence of feedback effect between renewable energy consumption and economic growth. While the relationship between renewable energy consumption and capital is found to be bidirectional and same inference was found to exist between capital and economic growth. The study proposes solid mechanisms that will help in averting renewable energy market failure locally and internationally among others.

Abstract: The Chinese economy has been recovering slowly from the global financial crisis, but it cannot achieve the same rapid development of the pre-recession period. Instead, the country has entered a new phase of economic development—a 'new normal'. We use a structural decomposition analysis and environmental input–output analysis to estimate the determinants of China's carbon emission changes during 2005–2012. China's imports are linked to a global multi-regional input–output model based on the Global Trade and Analysis Project database to calculate the embodied CO2 emissions in imports. We find that the global financial crisis has affected the drivers of China's carbon emission growth. From 2007 to 2010, the CO2 emissions induced by China's exports dropped, whereas emissions induced by capital formation grew rapidly. In the 'new normal', the strongest factors that offset CO2 emissions have shifted from efficiency gains to structural upgrading. Efficiency was the strongest factor offsetting China's CO2 emissions before 2010 but drove a 1.4% increase in emissions in the period 2010–2012. By contrast, production structure and consumption patterns caused a 2.6% and 1.3% decrease, respectively, in China's carbon emissions from 2010 to 2012. In addition, China tends to shift gradually from an investment to a consumption-driven economy. The proportion of CO2 emissions induced by consumption had a declining trend before 2010 but grew from 28.6%–29.1% during 2010–2012.

Abstract: Although the relationship among urbanization, energy consumption and CO2 emissions has been extensively studied in recent years, little attention has been paid to the effect of urbanization on residential energy consumption. China as the largest developing country still has tremendous potential for urbanization in the future, and this paper thus explores the effect of urbanization on the changes of residential energy consumption during 1996–2012 for China both from aggregated and disaggregated perspectives, using the Divisia decomposition method. The findings on aggregated energy show that the urbanization contributes 15.4% to the increase of residential energy consumption during 1996–2012 but with a diminishing trend over time. Meanwhile, from the disaggregated perspective, the urbanization process contributes to an improvement of residential energy consumption structure. Specifically, 1% of increase in urbanization rate may result in a decrease of 420 thousand million tonnes of residential coal consumption and an increase of 301 thousand tonnes of oil consumption.
