The new validation of popular culture: Sense and sentimentality in academia

In recent years the study of popular culture has gained legitimacy in American universities. TL;DR: The tendency in some recent reception research to celebrate ''the popular'' as a source of resistance to ''the hegemonic'' is criticized as discussed by the authors. But the reception research tradition of ''cultural studies'' offers a very appropriate and distinctive way of analysing these questions, especially by means of a critical ethnography of reception.
