In some cases – most obviously the telephone – people are co-present in time but distant in space, and the interaction is one-to-one. These are closest to ordinary conversation. Others are very different from ordinary conversation – for instance, a printed book is written by one or a small number of authors but read by indefinitely many people who may be widely dispersed in time and space. Abstract: A paradox of contemporary sociology is that the discipline has largely abandoned the empirical study of journalistic organizations and news institutions at the moment when the media has gained visibility in political, economic, and cultural spheres; when other academic fields have embraced the study of media and society; and when leading sociological theorists have broken from the disciplinary cannon to argue that the media are key actors in modern life. This article examines the point of journalistic production in one major news organization and shows how reportersand editors manage constraints of time, space, and market pressure under regimes of convergence news making. Abstract: Information systems, as a discipline, is concerned with the generation, storage and transmission of information, generally by technological means. As such, it would seem to be fundamental that it has a clear and agreed conceptualization of its core subject matter – namely “information”. Yet, we would claim, this is clearly not the case. As McKinney and Yoos point out, in a recent survey of the term information within information systems: “This is the IS predicament – using information as a ubiquitous label whose meaning is almost never specified. Virtually all the extant IS literature fails to explicitly specify meaning for the very label that identifies it.” We live in an information age and the vast majority of information (whatever it may be) is made available through a wide range of computer systems and one would expect therefore that information systems would in fact be one of the leading disciplines of the times rather than one that appears to hide itself in the shadows. Governments nowadays routinely utilize many academic experts to advise them in a whole range of areas but how many IS professors ever get asked? So, the primary purpose of this paper is to stimulate a debate within IS to discuss, and try to establish, a secure foundation for the discipline in terms of its fundamental concept – information. The structure of the paper is that we will firstly review the theories of information used (generally implicitly) within IS. Then we will widen the picture to consider the range of theories available more broadly within other disciplines. We will then suggest a particular approach that we consider most fruitful and discuss some of the major contentious issues. We will illustrate the theories with examples from IS.

Abstract: In modern society, "the public" is inevitably a mediated sphere as only media can bridge its spatial, temporal and topical diversity. While this media has traditionally been mass media (one-to-many), the arrival of the Internet has popularised meso media (many-to-many). In that context, the mediated public sphere has undergone significant changes. On the one hand, media theorists emphasise the enabling characteristics of digital media, hoping for an egalitarian public sphere and an empowerment of media users. On the other hand, critics discuss the regulatory attributes of social media platforms, which allow to preformat and to sanction communication more efficiently than ever before. This overview paper discusses the generic relationship between social media and mass media from a systems-theoretical point of view. Further, it addresses the question of whether the social web is in fact on the path to democratising the "public sphere".

Abstract: In recent research, the declining support for European integration is often attributed to the lack of a European public sphere. The comparatively low level of Europeanisation in the news media is said to promote euroskepticism or at least hinder further integration. In this paper we try to bridge the research gap between the formation of a European public opinion and the emergence of a European public sphere. Based on Eurobarometer data, this study evaluates the impact of domestic media use of EU citizens on their attitudes toward European integration. Using structural equation modeling (SEM) techniques in cross-national analysis, we can demonstrate that domestic media use does indeed have a small, but substantial positive effect on knowledge, attachment to Europe and support for the European Union in most member states.

Abstract: 1. Mediation lies at the core of religion. The dynamics of mediation have always been crucial for any sound understanding of religious communication. Religions are cultural laboratories for mediated communication. 2. In order to capture the significant changes in late modern societies in the field of religion, one must work with a rather precise conceptual tool: with mediatization as opposed to mediation. 3. Mediatization is not caused by the media in any direct causal sense but is brought about by religious actors and institutions. It is a mirror process, in which religious institutions anticipate the way the media observe religion and transform themselves accordingly. 4. Many reforms initiated by the Protestant Churches in Germany over the last 20 years must be ‘read’ as processes of mediatization of religion and its institutions.

Abstract: Documentaries are meant to tell a story, that is, to create memory, spark the imagination and support sharing (Rose, 2012). Moreover, documentaries aim to change people’s knowledge and/ or behavior (Barrett & Leddy, 2008). How can we know if a documentary has achieved these goals? We report on a research project where we have been developing, applying and evaluating a theoretically–grounded, empirical and computational solution for assessing the impact of social justice documentaries in a scalable, robust and rigorous fashion. We leverage cutting–edge methods from socio– technical data analytics—namely natural language processing and network analysis—for this purpose. We also built a publicly available software tool (ConText) that supports these routines. In this paper, we focus on the theoretical framework for this project, present our methodology, and provide an illustrative example of the proposed solution.
