In some cases – most obviously the telephone – people are co-present in time but distant in space, and the interaction is one-to-one. These are closest to ordinary conversation. Others are very different from ordinary conversation – for instance, a printed book is written by one or a small number of authors but read by indefinitely many people who may be widely dispersed in time and space. Abstract: A paradox of contemporary sociology is that the discipline has largely abandoned the empirical study of journalistic organizations and news institutions at the moment when the media has gained visibility in political, economic, and cultural spheres; when other academic fields have embraced the study of media and society; and when leading sociological theorists have broken from the disciplinary cannon to argue that the media are key actors in modern life. This article examines the point of journalistic production in one major news organization and shows how reportersand editors manage constraints of time, space, and market pressure under regimes of convergence news making. Доказана следующая теорема: если {fj} – поточечно ограниченная последовательность вещественных функций на отрезке [a, b] такая, что n(ε) ≡ lim supj→∞N(ε, fj , [a, b]) < ∞ для любого ε > 0, то {fj} содержит подпоследовательность, которая всюду на [a, b] сходится к некоторой функции f такой, что N(ε, f, [a, b]) 6 n(ε) при любом ε > 0. Abstract: In the context of the transformation of social institutions and the ideological reconstruction of Russian society, the social and philosophical interpretation of censorship is regarded as the basis for the development of a new information policy. The term of censorship is considered ambiguous in the modern world. Censorship as a form of state control of mass media content does not correspond to the declared values of a democratic society. However, censorship also acts as the most important condition for the functioning of the state. Censorship has, furthermore, the property of adapting to a changing social reality, to the peculiarities of social being, and, due to this circumstance, a study of the existence and functioning of censorship in the societies at different stages of state development has both theoretical and practical significance.

Abstract: We study the extent to which events transmitted by the media affect Greek bond interest rates by analyzing qualitatively articles in global newspapers during the Greek debt crisis. We focus on dates with strong changes in the yield to maturity of Greek government bonds in order to test whether news coverage matters for financial markets. We relate our results to a quantitative measure of media coverage using the novel method of topic models and examine days with a high level of a quantitative topic series. News coverage seems to matter on the majority of dates. However, we also find dates without crucial events and media coverage but that have strong changes in the bond yield and that seem affected by sources other than the media. The quantitative news measure regularly reveals relevant news articles on the days we analyzed.

Abstract: espanolEl Convenio del Consejo de Europa sobre prevencion y lucha contra la violencia contra las mujeres y la violencia domestica ha generado un acalorado debate tanto en la sociedad como en los medios de comunicacion de Letonia. La controversia surgio porque el Convenio parte de la premisa de que la violencia que se ejerce contra la mujer es una forma de violencia de genero que se ejerce contra las mujeres por el hecho de ser mujeres. El debate puso de manifiesto que existen diversas interpretaciones, erroneas algunas de ellas, del concepto de genero, asi como hostilidad hacia la igualdad de genero interpretada como propaganda contra los llamados valores familiares tradicionales. Los medios de comunicacion desempenan un cometido importante en la formacion del pensamiento publico. Hoy son la fuente principal de informacion; una fuente que no solo informa de acontecimientos importantes, sino que tambien configura la agenda publica. Al comentar diversos temas, los medios construyen actitudes publicas hacia esos temas. El objetivo de este articulo es examinar como se represento el Convenio de Estambul en los periodicos letones, cuales fueron los discursos dominantes en los medios de comunicacion, y que informacion se comunico con respecto al Convenio, el genero y la igualdad de genero. EnglishThe Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence caused heated discussion both in society and media in Latvia. The controversy was caused because Convention is based on the understanding that violence against women is a form of gender-based violence that is committed against women because they are women. The discussion showed that there are various interpretations and misinterpretations of gender as a concept. As well as hostility towards gender equality interpreted as a propaganda against so called traditional family values. The mass media play an important role in shaping of public thought. The mass media today are the main source of information – a source which not only offers reportage about important events, but also determines the public agenda. By offering commentary on various subjects, the media construct public attitudes towards those subjects. The aim of this article is to examine how the Istanbul Convention was represented in Latvian daily newspapers, what discourses were dominating in media; what information regarding the Convention, gender and gender equality were communicated.

Abstract: This article concerns the configuration of religion in the media sector of modern Korea. With the globalization of the modern world, mass media have increasingly become a differentiated field of communication through which to process various understandings of the religious or the spiritual in any given society. This article focuses on how religion is presented in the news media such as newspapers and broadcasters in contemporary South Korea. Since the 1990s, the media industry in Korean society has rapidly turned into an autonomous profession as the nation-state has made great progress toward democracy and social reformation. In this new social context, a majority of media workers have internalized the standards of liberal or even progressive journalism. Reflecting on the socio-political shift, media professionals have actively produced information and assessments about different religious groups, many of which are concerned with cultural, anti-social, and sensational dimensions of religion. The author studies the underlying trends and logic in the media's articulation of religion, which are selectively intertwined with the secular and religious constellation of Korean society.
