TL;DR: The authors explored the possibilities that emerge through the combination of multimodal social semiotics and auto-ethnography and argued that these approaches augment each other in generative ways and allow for an in-depth look at how texts are embedded in particular practices and communities.
Abstract: Different methodological approaches allow varying access to the objects of inquiry and enable one to ask different kinds of questions. This paper explores the possibilities that emerge through the combination of multimodal social semiotics and autoethnography. We discuss the epistemological and methodological bases for each approach and show the potentials in combining them. Drawing on an autoethnographic study in civil engineering, we argue that three aspects of research inquiry are enhanced through the combination of these approaches. These three aspects include a greater understanding of social context and its impact on meaning-making; an awareness of the multimodal nature of meaning-making; and an understanding of the ways in which the “interest” of the researcher (as participant) manifests in texts. Overall, we argue that these approaches augment each other in generative ways and allow for an in-depth look at how texts are embedded in particular practices and communities.

TL;DR: In this article, a semiotic trip in search of The Lost Symbol in Washington DC, designed with the esoteric codes of the secret teachings of all ages scattered around, is described, where the protagonist emerges illuminated as he assumes to have found the secret codes that could change disastrous human destiny right round into a more benevolent, promising one.
Abstract: This article offers a semiotic trip in search of The Lost Symbol in Washington DC, designed with the esoteric codes of the secret teachings of all ages scattered around. During his twelve-hour night journey the protagonist, a professor of symbolic codes and a highly experienced academic in the field of the esoteric codes, emerges illuminated as he assumes to have found the secret codes that could change disastrous human destiny right round into a more benevolent, promising one. By studying the intersemiotic nature of The Lost Symbol in terms of the secret teachings of all ages given in contrast to the religious doctrines this article explores in depth how effectively readers can develop cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP). As the semiotic reading approach offers a critical reading strategy, readers will be able to follow the consecutive steps presented in line with the principles of the Reading Strategy Instruction (RSI). TL;DR: In this article, a plan of action from the Norwegian government called "Culture and Trade" is analysed by means of critical discourse analysis (CDA) and the conclusion drawn from the analysis is that the document of action is a document on culture as trade, rather than a document about culture and trade.
Abstract: In this article, a plan of action from the Norwegian government called “Culture and Trade” is analysed by means of critical discourse analysis (CDA). The document elaborates on how cultural life and business life can cooperate to become more competitive and create values. As a point of departure, a text and image analysis is undertaken, before the article builds up to a final discussion of the plan of action’s relation to society at large. The document is interpreted as reproducing and inculcating neo-liberal discourses on globalisation, competitiveness and flexibility. The conclusion drawn from the analysis is that the plan of action is a document on culture as trade, rather than a document on culture and trade. Through discursive work it contributes to normalising uncertainty in flexible capitalism and to legitimising an instrumental use of culture.

TL;DR: In this article, the hidden philosophical meaning behind internet memes with feminist themes, chosen using a purposive sampling technique, was uncovered using the theoretical framework of critical discourse Sara Mills.
Abstract: This research departs from interest and curiosity about women's issues and positions as represented in internet memes. The purpose of this research is to uncover the hidden philosophical meaning behind internet memes with feminist themes, chosen using a purposive sampling technique. This research thus provides a feminist internet meme analysis using the theoretical framework of critical discourse Sara Mills. This qualitative research is divided into four sections, after opening with an overview of internet memes, their philosophical background, and Sara Mills critical discourse to looking at the issue of women's positions. The first section discusses internet memes with a Western cultural background; the second section the analysis of internet memes with an Eastern cultural background; and the third section argues the analysis of internet memes with a background in Islamic culture. The fourth section will provide a philosophical reflection on feminist as reflected in internet memes from Western, Eastern and Islamic cultures as viewed from critical discourse Sara Mills. The research seeks the philosophical meaning of internet memes with feminist themes by using a Sara Mills critical discourse framework. This approach will offer a deep understanding of women’s positions within their cultural backgrounds, as depicted through internet memes to communicate the philosophical meaning of feminist issues. Keywords: I nternet memes, critical discourse, philosophical meaning, women position .
