TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine the role of transnational corporations with reference to three cases of nationalism-induced crises in China and propose relational principles based on which TNCs could implement strategies to mitigate the damage from nationalisminduced crises and contribute to their home countries' diplomatic goals as corporate diplomats.
Abstract: For decades, the territorial dispute between China and Japan over the sovereignty of the Senkaku Islands has caused diplomatic deteriorations in Sino-Japanese relations. When there is extensive media coverage on news about the dispute, nationalist sentiments in both two countries would be triggered and could be expressed through detrimental behaviors towards transnational corporations (hereinafter TNCs). While TNCs play a significant political function as corporate diplomats for their home countries, they are subject to the risk of crises when their home countries are involved in political and economic conflicts with the foreign countries in which they have operations. Against this backdrop, this paper seeks to examine the roles of TNCs with reference to three cases of nationalism-induced crises in China. It proposes relational principles based on which TNCs could implement strategies to mitigate the damage from nationalism-induced crises and contribute to their home countries’ diplomatic goals as corporate diplomats.

TL;DR: The role of islands in maritime delimitation is discussed in this paper, where the default rules for baselines are found in Articles 3-16, which, with some modifications, reproduce articles found in the 1958 Convention on the Territorial Sea and die Contiguous Zone.
Abstract: The capacity of islands to generate maritime zones and to influence the location of international maritime boundaries was an international legal concern long before a laconic provision in the 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea took cognizance of a particular category of islands, \"[rjocks which cannot sustain human habitation or economic life of their own.\" Questions abound about the meaning of the provision and its consequences for many specific features around the globe. Disputes have arisen in the East Asian region in regard to features in the South China Sea (Pratas Reef, the Paracel Islands, Scarborough Reef and the Sprady Islands), the East China Sea (the Senkaku/Dioayuta/Tioa-yu-tai Islands, Danjo Gunto and certain of die Ryukyu Islands), and the Sea of Japan/East Sea (Liancort Rocks/Tok-do/Takeshima Islands) . The problem can be found in the Middle East and the Mediterranean Sea. It may arise in the Persian Gulf (Abu Musa, die Tumb Islands and the Hawar Islands), the Aegean Sea and the Red Sea (the Hanish/Zuqar Islands, Jabal al-Tayr and Zubayr Islands, the Mohabbakahs, die Haycocks and South West Rocks). The Caribbean Sea (Aves Island), among odiers, also has its share of such features. In the North Adantic Ocean, Rockall has been controversial. Although the first legal issue to arise is normally the question of national sovereignty, most disputes over tiiese features are actuated by questions regarding dieir legal effect on zones of national maritime jurisdiction and the delimitation of international maritime boundaries. To understand the role of rocks in maritime delimitation, one must begin by analyzing those parts of die LOS Convention that concern islands and the rules for identifying the baselines from which the various maritime zones are calculated. The default rules for baselines are found in Articles 3-16, which, with some modifications, reproduce articles found in the 1958 Convention on the Territorial Sea and die Contiguous Zone. The normal baseline is formed by the \"low-water line along the coast\" and the closing lines of bays and river mouths. Under certain conditions, the coastal state may establish systems of

TL;DR: A detailed investigation of the highly topical issues involved in the Diaoyu/Senkaku confrontation can be found in this paper, where the authors address the historical development of the dispute and their methods of delimiting territorial boundaries during the Ming and Qing periods, the Chinese concept of hegemony, and the history behind the deep mistrust that permeates Sino-Japanese relations.
Abstract: In September 1996, members of the Japan Youth Federation repaired a lighthouse on one of the Diaoyu (J. Senkaku) Islands, a small group of uninhabited islets north of Taiwan in the Liuqiu (J. Ryukyu) chain, known today as Okinawa. For months, outraged ethnic Chinese in Hong Kong and Taiwan protested Japan's presence in the islands, and violent confrontations between protesters and Japanese forces resulted. This is an investigation of the highly topical issues involved in the Diaoyu/Senkaku confrontation. It begins by addressing the historical development of the dispute. Other issues centre on Chinese views of sovereignty and their methods of delimiting territorial boundaries during the Ming and Qing periods, the Chinese concept of hegemony, and the history behind the deep mistrust that permeates Sino-Japanese relations.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that political elites can incite nationalism to gain an advantage in domestic political competition by propagating nationalist or imperialist myths, which can generate broad public support for their parochial interest.
Abstract: By propagating nationalist or imperialist myths, they can generate broad public support for their parochial interest~.~ The third emphasizes how political elites can incite nationalism to gain an advantage in domestic political competition. Nationalism can be used both to mobilize support for threatened elites and to fend off potential challenger^.^ This function can be particularly important in democratizing or liberalizing authoritarian regimes, which lack established political institutions to channel ~~~~~~ ~~ Erica Strecker Downs is a Ph.D. candidate in the Politics Department at Princeton University. TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss one of the most difficult disputes in the world, the territorial dispute over the Tiaoyu Islands, and analyze the issues involved in the dispute, as interpreted and applied by international judicial authorities.
Abstract: This article discusses one of the most difficult disputes in the world, the territorial dispute over the Tiaoyu Islands. This dispute has defied solution for decades. The situation in the area has drastically deteriorated since the early 1990s, when the disputants began intensifying their claims. The issues involved in the dispute will be analyzed by reference to current law, as interpreted and applied by international judicial authorities.
