The theory and practice of group psychotherapy

01 Jan 1970-
TL;DR: Yalom as mentioned in this paper described the course of therapy from both the patient's and the therapist's viewpoint in Encounter Groups: First Facts (1973) and Every Day gets a Little Closer: A Twice-Told Therapy (1974).
Abstract: This book first appeared in 1970 and has gone into two further editions, one in 1975 and this one in 1985. Yalom is also the author of Existential Psychotherapy (1980), In-patient Group Psychotherapy (1983), the co-author with Lieberman of Encounter Groups: First Facts (1973) and with Elkin of Every Day Gets a Little Closer: A Twice-Told Therapy (1974) (which recounts the course of therapy from the patient's and the therapist's viewpoint). The present book is the central work of the set and seems to me the most substantial. It is also one of the most readable of his works because of its straightforward style and the liberal use of clinical examples.

TL;DR: Results indicate that game-based cognitive-behavioral therapy was effective for improving internalizing and externalizing symptoms, reducing sexually inappropriate behaviors, and improving children's knowledge of abuse and self-protection skills.
Abstract: This preliminary investigation examined the efficacy of a game-based cognitive-behavioral therapy group program for elementary school-aged children who have experienced sexual abuse. Treatment aimed to improve: (a) internalizing symptoms, (b) externalizing behaviors, (c) sexually inappropriate behaviors, (d) social skills deficits, (e) self-esteem problems, and (f) knowledge of healthy sexuality and self-protection skills. Results indicate that game-based cognitive-behavioral therapy was effective for improving internalizing and externalizing symptoms, reducing sexually inappropriate behaviors, and improving children's knowledge of abuse and self-protection skills. Although results pointed in a positive direction for social skills and self-perception, these findings were not statistically significant. Clinical significance was also evaluated to assess the clinical utility of treatment effects. Treatment implications of the findings and future research directions are discussed.

TL;DR: This paper reviewed the available reports of parenting problems among mothers with childhood sexual abuse histories and presented clinical case material to illustrate the complexities of treating mothers with CSA histories and their children, and made preliminary recommendations for interventions with mothers at risk for intergenerational abuse and mental health problems among their children.
Abstract: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is shockingly common among women in the USA and is particularly prevalent among female psychiatric patients. Despite theoretical accounts and empirical evidence that developmental history, especially child abuse, plays a significant role in parenting skills, there are no reports of parenting interventions with mothers with CSA histories. This article reviews the available reports of parenting problems among mothers with CSA histories, and presents clinical case material to illustrate the complexities of treating mothers with CSA histories and their children. Preliminary recommendations for interventions with mothers at risk for intergenerational abuse and mental health problems among their children are outlined.

TL;DR: In this article, a model for supervisors of group counselors to use to promote cognitive complexity in their supervisees is described, which has been linked to many positive counseling skills, including greater flexibility, empathy, confidence, and client conceptualization.
Abstract: This article describes a model for supervisors of group counselors to use to promote cognitive complexity in their supervisees Counselor cognitive complexity has been linked to many positive counseling skills, including greater flexibility, empathy, confidence, and client conceptualization Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives provides a mechanism to help supervisors encourage the growth of cognitive complexity in their supervisees Applied to supervisees learning group work, this model can help guide supervisors to use interventions that match the cognitive developmental level of the supervisee and push the supervisee toward higher levels of thinking Examples for interventions that match trainee cognitive complexity and stage of group are included

TL;DR: The Group Questionnaire (GQ-D) as discussed by the authors is a paraphrasing of the GQ-C. The Gruppenfragebogen is ein Selbstbeurteilungsinstrument, das es ermoglicht, auf okonomische Art hilfreiche Aspekte von Beziehungen innerhalb von Gruppens zu erfassen.
Abstract: Die Uberprufung der psychometrischen Eigenschaften der deutschen Version des Group Questionnaire (GQ; Krogel 2009) wird beschrieben.
