The ‘universal’ dielectric response

Abstract: A review of dielectric data for a wide range of solids proves the existence of a remarkable ‘universality’ of frequency and time responses which is essentially incompatible with the multiplicity of currently accepted detailed interpretations. Certain unique features of the universal behaviour strongly suggest the dominant role of many-body interactions.

Abstract: This review presents a wide-ranging broad-brush picture of dielectric relaxation in solids, making use of the existence of a `universality' of dielectric response regardless of a wide diversity of materials and structures, with dipolar as well as charge-carrier polarization. The review of the experimental evidence includes extreme examples of highly conducting materials showing strongly dispersive behaviour, low-loss materials with a `flat', frequency-independent susceptibility, dipolar loss peaks etc. The surprising conclusion is that despite the evident complexity of the relaxation processes certain very simple relations prevail and this leads to a better insight into the nature of these processes.

Abstract: This review summarizes recent developments in the theory of spin glasses, as well as pertinent experimental data. The most characteristic properties of spin glass systems are described, and related phenomena in other glassy systems (dielectric and orientational glasses) are mentioned. The Edwards-Anderson model of spin glasses and its treatment within the replica method and mean-field theory are outlined, and concepts such as "frustration," "broken replica symmetry," "broken ergodicity," etc., are discussed. The dynamic approach to describing the spin glass transition is emphasized. Monte Carlo simulations of spin glasses and the insight gained by them are described. Other topics discussed include site-disorder models, phenomenological theories for the frozen phase and its excitations, phase diagrams in which spin glass order and ferromagnetism or antiferromagnetism compete, the Ne\'el model of superparamagnetism and related approaches, and possible connections between spin glasses and other topics in the theory of disordered condensed-matter systems.

Abstract: Relaxor ferroelectrics were discovered almost 50 years ago among the complex oxides with perovskite structure. In recent years this field of research has experienced a revival of interest. In this paper we review the progress achieved. We consider the crystal structure including quenched compositional disorder and polar nanoregions (PNR), the phase transitions including compositional order-disorder transition, transition to nonergodic (probably spherical cluster glass) state and to ferroelectric phase. We discuss the lattice dynamics and the peculiar (especially dielectric) relaxation in relaxors. Modern theoretical models for the mechanisms of PNR formation and freezing into nonergodic glassy state are also presented.

Abstract: Some of the most relevant finite-size and surface effects in the magnetic and transport properties of magnetic fine particles and granular solids are reviewed. The stability of the particle magnetization, superparamagnetic regime and the magnetic relaxation are discussed. New phenomena appearing due to interparticle interactions, such as the collective state and non-equilibrium dynamics, are presented. Surface anisotropy and disorder, spin-wave excitations, as well as the enhancements of the coercive field and particle magnetization are also reviewed. The competition of surface and finite-size effects to settle the magnetic behaviour is addressed. Finally, two of the most relevant phenomena in the transport properties of granular solids are summarized namely, giant magnetoresistance in granular heterogeneous alloys and Coulomb gap in insulating granular solids.

Abstract: The empirical dielectric decay function γ(t)= exp –(t/τ0)β may be transformed analytically to give the frequency dependent complex dielectric constant if β is chosen to be 0.50. The resulting dielectric constant and dielectric loss curves are non-symmetrical about the logarithm of the frequency of maximum loss, and are intermediate between the Cole-Cole and Davidson-Cole empirical relations. Using a short extrapolation procedure, good agreement is obtained between the empirical representation and the experimental curves for the α relaxation in polyethyl acrylate. It is suggested that the present representation would have a general application to the α relaxations in other polymers. The Hamon approximation, with a small applied correction, is valid for the present function with β= 0.50 in the range log(ωτ0) > –0.5, but cannot be used at lower frequencies.

Abstract: The experimental evidence concerning the density of states in amorphous semiconductors and the ranges of energy in which states are localized is reviewed; this includes d.c. and a.c. conductivity, drift mobility and optical absorption. There is evidence that for some chalcogenide semiconductors the model proposed by Cohen, Fritzsche and Ovshinsky (1969) should be modified by introducing a band of localized states, near the centre of the gap. The values of C, when the d.c. conductivity is expressed as C exp (- E/kT), are considered. The behaviour of the optical absorption coefficient near the absorption edge and its relation to exciton formation are discussed. Finally, an interpretation of some results on photoconductivity is offered.
