Abstract: Abstract The study of ELF and of translation have been conducted with little reference to each other, yet they have a great deal of common ground, and would benefit from greater recognition of their common interests. Both are concerned with crosslinguistic communication in the unprecedented linguistic landscape of the 21st century. Both are central to the understanding and amelioration of contemporary problems. Both can be regarded as branches of applied linguistics. In addition, translation into English is increasingly both by and for non-native speakers. Having surveyed these similarities, the article explores how concepts and theories from translation studies are relevant to the study of ELF: notably the notions of nativisation and foreignisation, and polysystems theory, which conceives of change beginning in the interaction of systems and at their peripheries. In conclusion, the article discusses the range of crucial contemporary issues to which both ELF and translation are relevant and central, but points out some imbalances and omissions on both sides. It is suggested that given their importance in international and intranational issues of all kinds, and their relevance to other social sciences, the two fields of enquiry, expanded in range and working together, could be central rather than peripheral to applied linguistics.

Abstract: O artigo trata da traducao como tecnica para a educacao linguistica de alunos do ensino medio ou superior de tres anos, e nao de cursos para tradutores. As premissas sao: a. os alunos devem ter um nivel de competencia que lhes garanta a possibilidade de mover-se com uma certa desenvoltura na lingua estrangeira, sem sofrer um bloqueio por problemas linguisticos elementares; b. a traducao deve ser apresentada como um desafio entre o estudante e o texto, atribuindo-se ao docente um papel de ajudante e nao de juiz; c. a traducao e uma atividade motivadora se o texto for motivador, mas, acima de tudo, se forem mudadas as modalidades de execucao, introduzindo-se um elemento de novidade numa tecnica que, de outro modo, vai resultar sempre igual a si mesma; e costuma-se escolher textos breves e psicologicamente relevantes; d. o objetivo da traducao e (meta)linguistico, mas e (sobretudo?) intercultural, e somente com a traducao os alunos podem se dar conta de quanta cultura, de quanta visao de mundo, de quantos valores estao engastados em cada palavra. Se o aluno descobrir a infinita complexidade das linguas, o modo magico com que cada lingua se impregna do espirito de um povo e com o qual resiste, luta, se debate para nao ser traduzida, e se o aluno, sentindo-se pouco capaz, se recusar a traduzir para nao trair, o sucesso da traducao como tecnica didatica sera total. A partir dessas premissas, o autor analisa os objetivos das varias modalidades de traducao na aprendizagem de uma lingua estrangeira (e, de modo geral, na educacao linguistica integrada) e apresenta as inumeras variantes com as quais a traducao pode ser realizada em sala de aula.
