Journal ArticleDOI
Getting better with bifidobacteria
TL;DR: The role that Bifidobacterium species play as a prominent probiotic component of the authors' gastrointestinal microflora is discussed and some forthcoming insights into the general characteristics of B ifidobacteria genomes are provided.
Journal ArticleDOI
Escherichia coli in Europe: An overview
TL;DR: The current status of E. coli strains clinically relevant in European countries is summarized and therapeutic interventions and strategies to prevent and control infections are presented and discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology of Rifaximin, a Gastrointestinal Selective Antibiotic
Carmelo Scarpignato,Iva Pelosini +1 more
TL;DR: Both experimental and clinical pharmacology clearly show that this compound is a non-systemic antibiotic with a broad spectrum of antibacterial action covering Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms, both aerobes and anaerobes, and this will minimize both antimicrobial resistance and systemic adverse events.
Journal ArticleDOI
Travel-acquired ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae: impact of colonization at individual and community level
TL;DR: The acquisition rates reveal that 2070% of visitors to (sub)tropical regions get colonized by ESBL-PE, and the main risk factors predisposing to colonization during travel are destination, travelers diarrhea, and antibiotic use.
Journal ArticleDOI
Travel-Associated Enteric Infections Diagnosed After Return to the United States, Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet), 2004–2009
Magdalena E. Kendall,Stacy M. Crim,Kathleen E. Fullerton,Pauline V. Han,Alicia Cronquist,Beletshachew Shiferaw,L. Amanda Ingram,Joshua Rounds,Eric D. Mintz,Barbara E. Mahon +9 more
TL;DR: The Latin America and Caribbean region accounts for most travel-associated enteric infections diagnosed in the United States, although travel to Africa carries the greatest risk.
