TLDR
Characteristics of biomarkers in oyster from the two polluted water bodies, i.e. S-I and S-II, are similar in nature in comparison to less polluted site (S-III), but maximum lipid peroxidation was noted during monsoon followed by post-monsoon and pre- monsoon.
Abstract
Variations of antioxidant biomarkers such as catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were studied in edible part of mangrove oyster Saccostrea cucullata, collected from three different water bodies, such as Namkhana (S-I), Frazergaunge (S-II) and Sajnekhali (S-III) of Indian Sundarbans which are exposed to different degrees of anthropogenic activity. The study was conducted for consecutive two years (2010 and 2011) in the respective water bodies. Characteristics of biomarkers in oyster from the two polluted water bodies, i.e. S-I and S-II, are similar in nature in comparison to less polluted site (S-III). The catalase, superoxide dismutase activity and lipid peroxidation in oyster flesh exhibit significant (p<0.01) spatial and temporal variation among the three stations. Oysters from S-I were significantly higher (p<0.05) in antioxidant enzyme activities than oysters from S-III, which differ in their amount of pollution sources. Maximum antioxidant enzymes activi...

Oxidative stress ecology on Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas from lagoon and offshore Italian sites.

TL;DR: Principal component analysis revealed similar trend in biomarkers levels between sites during the whole sampling period, suggesting that the level of oxidative stress biomarkers in both tissues may be related to seasonal progress and biological cycle of oysters sampled from the two lagoons and offshore sites along the Italian coasts of the Mediterranean Sea.

Ecotoxicological Studies of Heavy Metals on Edible Oysters (Crassostrea spp.) from Goa Coast, India

TL;DR: In this paper, the spatial and temporal variation in surface water and sediment quality, parameters were evaluated from the three sites Chicalim Bay (CB), Nerul Creek (NC), and Chapora Bay (ChB) along the Goa coast, which has major oyster beds.

Original Article Effect of microbial load on the condition index of the edible oyster, Saccostrea cucullata in the Sundarbans, India

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of microbial load on the condition Index of the edible oyster, Saccostrea cucullata were analysed on monthly basis during 2010 and 2011 from three different stations (Namkhana, Frasergaunge and Sajnekhali) of Indian Sundarbans.

Applicative implications of Carcinus maenas and Ruditapes philippinarum in biomonitoring studies after oil spills

TL;DR: Gill and digestive gland in clams and gill in crabs were found to be the most reliable tissues for analysis of biomarkers and are considered suitable for assessing toxicity of sediments after a marine crude oil spill accident.

A spectrophotometric method for measuring the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide by catalase.

TL;DR: A quantitative, spectrophotometric technique for following the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide has been developed for routine studies of catalase kinetics and appears to give lower values forCatalase activity than do titration techniques.

The use of biomarkers to assess the impact of pollution in coastal environments of the Iberian Peninsula: a practical approach

TL;DR: A battery of biomarkers of contaminant exposure and effects are proposed that could be incorporated into programmes monitoring the quality of the coastal environment in the Iberian Peninsula and would be undertaken in conjunction with chemical measures of contaminants burdens in selected sentinel species.

Antioxidant Functions of Vitamins

TL;DR: Antioxidant functions are associated with lowering DNA damage, malignant transformation, and other parameters of cell damage in vitro as well as epidemiologically with lowered incidence of certain types of cancer and degenerative diseases, such as ischemic heart disease and cataract.

Oxidative stress: animal adaptations in nature

TL;DR: The key to successful transitions in several systems is the induction, during the oxygen-limited state, of elevated activities of antioxidant and associated enzymes, so that damage during the reintroduction of oxygen is minimized.
