TL;DR: A modular semantic-driven and service-based interoperability framework, in order to open up, share and reuse educational systems’ content and knowledge components, and focuses on content creation by proposing ontology-driven authoring tools that reflect the modularization in the educational systems.
Abstract: The big question for many researchers in the area of educational systems now is what is the next step in the evolution of e-learning? Are we finally moving from a scattered intelligence to a coherent space of collaborative intelligence? How close we are to the vision of the Educational Semantic Web and what do we need to do in order to realize it? Two main challenges can be seen in this direction: on the one hand, to achieve interoperability among various educational systems and on the other hand, to have automated, structured and unified authoring support for their creation. In the spirit of the Semantic Web a key to enabling the interoperability is to capitalize on the (1) semantic conceptualization and ontologies, (2) common standardized communication syntax, and (3) large-scale service-based integration of educational content and functionality provision and usage. A central role in achieving unified authoring support plays the process-awareness of authoring tools, which should reflect the semantic evolution of e-learning systems. The purpose of this paper is to outline the state-of-the-art research along those lines and to suggest a realistic way towards the Educational Semantic Web. With regard to the latter we first propose a modular semantic-driven and service-based interoperability framework, in order to open up, share and reuse educational systems’ content and knowledge components. Then we focus on content creation by proposing ontology-driven authoring tools that reflect the modularization in the educational systems, maintain a consistent view on the entire authoring process, and provide wide (semi-) automation of the complex authoring tasks.

TL;DR: A highlevel architecture of a SCORM compatible authoring and runtime system that utilizes the Learning Design principles to provide the means for designing activity-based learning systems is presented.
Abstract: ∗ Author for Correspondance The need for e-learning systems that support a diverse set of pedagogical requirements has been identified as an important issue in web-based education. Until now, significant R&D effort has been devoted aiming towards webbased educational systems tailored to specific pedagogical approaches. The most advanced of them are based on the IEEE Learning Technology Systems Architecture and use standardized content structuring based on the ADL Sharable Content Object Reference Model in order to enable sharing and reusability of the learning content. However, sharing of learning activities among different web-based educational systems still remains an open issue. On the other hand, existing Learning Management Systems (LMS) provide authoring tools that are only tailored to the capabilities of the specific system in hand. The open question is how web-based educational systems should be designed in order to enable reusing and repurposing of learning activities. In this paper we first discuss the limitations of the current state-of-the art learning systems and authoring tools and investigate the use of the Learning Design framework as a mean to address those limitations. Then, we present a highlevel architecture of a SCORM compatible authoring and runtime system that utilizes the Learning Design principles to provide the means for designing activity-based learning systems. Finally, we discuss the use of ASK-LDT, an authoring system developed based on the proposed architecture, in the design of complex learning activities.

TL;DR: This research reports on the work in progress to develop a framework forSemantic Web mining and exploration, a practical method towards Semantic Web application to e-Learning along with its design framework is suggested.
Abstract: The Semantic Web has opened new horizons for internet applications in general and for e-Learning in particular. The e-Learning community is aiming at having much more effective services than what is currently provided by any of the available computer aided tutoring, or learning management systems. The e-Learning process is no more restricted to providing courses online. Nowadays, knowledge is distributed throughout the Web on millions of pages, PDF files, multimedia and other resources. The learner is not necessarily someone who is registered in a course or needs e-Learning to support a particular course. Students and researchers need vast amount of material and spend considerable amount of time trying to learn about a particular subject or find relevant information. This research reports on the work in progress to develop a framework for Semantic Web mining and exploration, a practical method towards Semantic Web application to e-Learning along with its design framework is suggested.

TL;DR: A novel method for maintenance of user’s characteristics based on spreading activation is presented, which considers changes in user behavior and relationships that may exist among contents in order to maintain learner characteristics.
Abstract: Learners have different knowledge, interests and also goals in any educational process. If all the learners are provided the same content the process will probably not meet expected goals. A personalized approach to a learner increases the efficiency of the learning process. It is based on information about the learner that is subject of change. Several adaptive educational systems exist. However, they usually do not consider changes in user behavior and relationships that may exist among contents in order to maintain learner characteristics. In this paper we present a novel method for maintenance of user’s characteristics based on spreading activation.
