Vehicular collision avoidance system

11 Jul 2002-
TL;DR: In this article, a collision avoidance system for use in a vehicle is described, where a sensor subsystem is used to capture sensor data relating to one or more areas outside the vehicle, and a threat assessment is sent to a feedback subsystem so that if appropriate, a response is generated by the system.
Abstract: A collision avoidance system for use in a vehicle. The system facilitates the avoidance of other vehicles and other potential hazards or obstacles. A sensor subsystem is used to capture sensor data relating to one or more areas outside the vehicle. Sensor data is sent from the sensor subsystem to a threat assessment subsystem for generating a threat assessment from the sensor data. The threat assessment is then sent to a feedback subsystem so that if appropriate, a response is generated by the system. The response can take the form of a visual, audio, and/or haptic warning. The response can also take the form of changes with respect to the vehicle itself, such as an automatic reduction in speed. The system can incorporate user-based attributes, vehicle-based attributes, and environment-based attributes in evaluating potential threats and contemplating system responses to those threats. A wide variety of different heuristics can be applied by the system. The system can be configured to minimize nuisance alarms and accommodate distinctions between users based on user preferences, user history, and other factors.

TL;DR: In this article, the system monitors selected vehicle parameters while a vehicle is being driven, and detects one or more vehicle operation violations by comparing the selected vehicle parameter to predetermined thresholds, and a mentoring message is provided to the driver if the threshold is exceeded.
Abstract: System and method for providing feedback to drivers. The system monitors selected vehicle parameters while a vehicle is being driven, and detects one or more vehicle operation violations by comparing the selected vehicle parameters to predetermined thresholds. A mentoring message is provided to the driver if the threshold is exceeded. If a vehicle operation violation has not been corrected within a preselected time period, then a violation report may be sent to a third party or a central server and/or a different mentoring message may be provided to the driver. Vehicle parameter data may be monitored from an on-board vehicle diagnostic system. The mentoring message may be an audible warning, such as a spoken message, or a visual warning, such as a text message. The selected vehicle parameters may be a vehicle speed, a vehicle acceleration, or a vehicle seatbelt use.

TL;DR: In this paper, a decision computer mounted in the controlled vehicle receives such code signals along with code signals generated by the speedometer or one or more sensors sensing steering mechanism operation and generates control signals.
Abstract: A system and method assists the driver of a motor vehicle in preventing accidents or minimizing the effects of same. In one form, a television camera is mounted on a vehicle and scans the roadway ahead of the vehicle as the vehicle travels. Continuously generated video picture signals output by the camera are electronically processed and analyzed by an image analyzing computer, which generates codes that serve to identify obstacles. A decision computer mounted in the controlled vehicle receives such code signals along with code signals generated by the speedometer or one or more sensors sensing steering mechanism operation and generates control signals. Such code signals may be displayed, and a synthetic speech or special sound generating and warning means used, to warn the driver of the vehicle of approaching and existing hazards. The system may also use the control signals, particularly through application of fuzzy logic, to control the operation of the brakes and steering mechanism of the vehicle to avoid or lessen the effects of a collision. In a particular form, the decision computer may select the evasive action taken from a number of choices, depending on whether and where the detection device senses other vehicles or obstacles.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for evaluating a driver's performance under actual real-time conditions to determine the driver's ability to safely operate a vehicle, utilizes the information that is gathered by a radar system (200, 210) and other sensors (4a), together with information previously stored in an event recording device.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for evaluating a driver's performance under actual real-time conditions to determine the driver's ability to safely operate a vehicle, utilizes the information that is gathered by a radar system (200, 210) and other sensors (4a), together with information previously stored in an event recording device (5). Conditions monitored are used to make a determination as to whether the driver is performing in conformity with normal driving standards and the driver's own past performance. The driver's performance is constantly monitored and compared to that driver's past performance to determine whether the driver's present performance is impaired, and if so, whether the impairment is detrimental to the driver's ability to safely operate the vehicle.

TL;DR: In this article, a warning is automatically generated to notify the vehicle operator of the impending collision, and the sensor data and kinematic state of the vehicle can be transmitted to other vehicles so that the other vehicles are also notified of possible collision conditions.
Abstract: Sensor data is generated for areas around a vehicle. Any objects detected in the sensor data are identified and a kinematic state for the object determined. The kinematic states for the detected objects are compared with the kinematic state of the vehicle. If it is likely that a collision will occur between the detected objects and the local vehicle, a warning is automatically generated to notify the vehicle operator of the impending collision. The sensor data and kinematic state of the vehicle can be transmitted to other vehicles so that the other vehicles are also notified of possible collision conditions.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system for restricting use of a vehicle by a selected vehicle operator to permitted time intervals and permitted vehicle travel corridors is presented, where a driver is seated behind the driver's wheel, and the system requires that the driver provide one or more samples of an ident indicium, such as a fingerprint, facial scan, retinal scan, voice sample or blood sample analysis, to identify the driver or of a personal identification indicium contained on a token or card, or of personal information entered using a data entry device (e.g., keypad).
Abstract: A system for restricting use of a vehicle by a selected vehicle operator to permitted time intervals and permitted vehicle travel corridors. If a driver is seated behind the driver's wheel, the system requires that the driver provide one or more samples of an ident indicium, such as a fingerprint, facial scan, retinal scan, voice sample or blood sample analysis, to identify the driver, or of a personal identification indicium contained on a token or card, or of personal information entered using a data entry device (e.g., keypad). When this indicium is satisfactorily presented and analyzed, the system allows operation of the vehicle (including selected vehicle accessories) but further determines (i) whether the present time and/or accumulated vehicle operation time and/or mileage is within a permitted time interval or accumulated time and/or mileage range and (ii) whether the vehicle present location and/or speed are within permitted ranges corresponding to the permitted time interval. If either condition (i) or (ii) is not met, vehicle operation is temporarily disabled, or a coded alarm signal is transmitted, or other appropriate control actions are taken. Alternatively, operation of a vehicle is restricted to one or more permitted location and/or velocity ranges and to one or more permitted time intervals or accumulated operation time and/or mileage ranges. Vehicle location determination (LD) can be implemented using signals from GPS, GLONASS, LEO, LORAN or similar LD systems. A permitted travel region and/or a permitted time interval can be changed remotely, by transmission of a change or reprogramming signal, or can be changed at the LD system carried on the vehicle.
