TLDR
A new philosophy in designing image and video quality metrics is followed, which uses structural dis- tortion as an estimate of perceived visual distortion as part of full-reference (FR) video quality assessment.
Abstract
Objective image and video quality measures play important roles in a variety of image and video pro- cessing applications, such as compression, communication, printing, analysis, registration, restoration, enhancement and watermarking. Most proposed quality assessment ap- proaches in the literature are error sensitivity-based meth- ods. In this paper, we follow a new philosophy in designing image and video quality metrics, which uses structural dis- tortion as an estimate of perceived visual distortion. A com- putationally ecient approach is developed for full-reference (FR) video quality assessment. The algorithm is tested on the video quality experts group (VQEG) Phase I FR-TV test data set. Keywords—Image quality assessment, video quality assess- ment, human visual system, error sensitivity, structural dis- tortion, video quality experts group (VQEG)

Multiscale structural similarity for image quality assessment

TL;DR: This paper proposes a multiscale structural similarity method, which supplies more flexibility than previous single-scale methods in incorporating the variations of viewing conditions, and develops an image synthesis method to calibrate the parameters that define the relative importance of different scales.

Mean squared error: Love it or leave it? A new look at Signal Fidelity Measures

TL;DR: This article has reviewed the reasons why people want to love or leave the venerable (but perhaps hoary) MSE and reviewed emerging alternative signal fidelity measures and discussed their potential application to a wide variety of problems.

Most apparent distortion: full-reference image quality assessment and the role of strategy

TL;DR: A quality assessment method [most apparent distortion (MAD)], which attempts to explicitly model these two separate strategies, local luminance and contrast masking and changes in the local statistics of spatial-frequency components are used to estimate appearance-based perceived distortion in low-quality images.

Study of Subjective and Objective Quality Assessment of Video

TL;DR: A recent large-scale subjective study of video quality on a collection of videos distorted by a variety of application-relevant processes results in a diverse independent public database of distorted videos and subjective scores that is freely available.

A universal image quality index

TL;DR: Although the new index is mathematically defined and no human visual system model is explicitly employed, experiments on various image distortion types indicate that it performs significantly better than the widely used distortion metric mean squared error.

Image quality measures and their performance

TL;DR: Although some numerical measures correlate well with the observers' response for a given compression technique, they are not reliable for an evaluation across different techniques, and a graphical measure called Hosaka plots can be used to appropriately specify not only the amount, but also the type of degradation in reconstructed images.

Shiftable multiscale transforms

TL;DR: Two examples of jointly shiftable transforms that are simultaneously shiftable in more than one domain are explored and the usefulness of these image representations for scale-space analysis, stereo disparity measurement, and image enhancement is demonstrated.

The visible differences predictor: an algorithm for the assessment of image fidelity

Scott Daly
TL;DR: In this paper, an algorithm for determining whether the goal of image fidelity is met as a function of display parameters and viewing conditions is presented, which is intended for the design and analysis of image processing algorithms, imaging systems, and imaging media.
