Water quality evaluation ofkonandur pond, thirthahalli, karnataka, india

Abstract: Water samples were collected from konandur pond in Theerthalli (T). The physic o-chemical parameters like TDS, Total Hardness, Total Alkalinity, Nitrogen, NO 3 - , Cl - , SO 4 -2 , Ca +2 , Mg +2 , and Phosphate were analyzed. The results were considered for correlation analysis and it was observed that many of the parameters bear a good positive correlation and some bears a nega tive correlation. The study revealed th at, pond water was not much polluted. In the light of standard of water quality recommended by WHO, the pond water should be used for drinking and cooking after proper treatment.

Abstract: 1. Discussion Alkalinity of a water is its acid-neutralizing capacity. It is the sum of all the titratable bases. The measured value may vary significantly with the end-point pH used. Alkalinity is a measure of an aggregate property of water and can be interpreted in terms of specific substances only when the chemical composition of the sample is known. Alkalinity is significant in many uses and treatments of natural waters and wastewaters. Because the alkalinity of many surface waters is primarily a function of carbonate, bicarbonate, and hydroxide content, it is taken as an indication of the concentration of these constitutents. The measured values also may include contributions from borates, phosphates, silicates, or other bases if these are present. Alkalinity in excess of alkaline earth metal concentrations is significant in determining the suitability of a water for irrigation. Alkalinity measurements are used in the interpretation and control of water and wastewater treatment processes. Raw domestic wastewater has an alkalinity less than, or only slightly greater than, that of the water supply. Properly operating anaerobic digesters typically have supernatant alkalinities in the range of 2000 to 4000 mg calcium carbonate (CaCO3)/L. 1

Abstract: Most organisms react to their environment. Given, a suitable environment, and the organisms thrive; unsuitable, and they depart, or perhaps die out. For instance squirrels will thrive in a forest where nuts are plentiful and certain other conditions are favorable. But if the nut-bearing trees be removed, or if enemies become too numerous and effective, the squirrels will depart or will be killed off. Given, a certain environment, a keen observer will enumerate the prevailing forms of life to be found there; or if a certain assemblage of life forms be named, the same observer will state the approximate environment in which they were found. Thus in an orchard or meadow we usually find grasshoppers, mice, certain birds, and butterflies. And if a hunter returns from his trip with game bag filled chiefly with ducks or other waterfowl we certainly know that his field of operations has been the marshes or streams rather than the hardwood forest.

Abstract: Water samples were collected from three different sites of the Biga Stream (Canakkale, Turkey) in the months of October 2007 – September 2008 for the analyzing of some physico-chemical and microbiological parameters of the stream. In the present investigation, the mean average value (mean ±SD) of the stream temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total coliform (TC) and faecal coliform (FC) were noted as 15.533 ± 0.199oC,8.332 ± 0.253 mg/L, 136.60 ± 2.51 mg/L, 7.5078 ± 0.0427, 869.93 ± 3.72 iS/cm, 39381 ± 7952 MPN/100 mL and 42500 ± 7072 MPN/100 mL, respectively. Based on results of comparison of data with WPCR, it is seen that waters of Biga Stream at the sites 1, 2 and 3 belonged to Class 4, for parameter BOD5 and faecal coliform and belonged to Class 3 for parameter total coliform. We conclude that there is a great potential risk of infection of waters from the Biga Stream.

Abstract: Purle pond of Shivamogga is one of the important sources of water supply to agricultural areas receives domestic waste water almost throughout the year and exhibits abundance of phytoplankton population. An year long study was conducted to measure various physico-chemical parameters like temperature, turbidity, conductivity, hydrogen ion concentration, free carbon dioxide, dissolved oxygen, BOD, alkalinity, hardness, presence of various radicals etc., The turbidity of pond water was found to be highest during June-July and lowest in the month of November. BOD was highest in the month of July while lowest in December. The study revealed that there is greater degree of pollution in the studied pond and hence, preventive measures are required to avoid further deterioration of the pond water quality. The estimated water quality parameters were compared with the WHO and IS standards.
