TLDR
An internet‐SMS based geo‐hazard warning communication system based on an internet‐resident concept and the available cellular mobile infrastructure is proposed in this study, with a total number of 120 messages.Abstract:
Purpose – Communication of an impending hazard to people in near real time is critical. The purpose of this paper is to develop an internet‐SMS based geo‐hazard warning communication system.Design/methodology/approach – A warning system based on an internet‐resident concept and the available cellular mobile infrastructure is proposed in this study. The functionality of the system is modular in architecture.Findings – The messages have been transmitted in a set of 20 SMSs six times, to locally‐owned mobile numbers, resulting in a total number of 120. It has been found that 58 messages got delivered within ten seconds, the rest within 40 more seconds. The threat messages reached the impending threat areas within acceptable time delay.Originality/value – The paper describes the implementation of a novel and stand‐alone system for dynamic hazard warning. Cellular or mobile phone, a gadget used by common man, is expected to be the best proposition to effectively warn people individually and to propagate hazard...read more

An Experimental Global Prediction System for Rainfall-triggered Landslides using Satellite Remote Sensing and Geospatial Datasets
TL;DR: A framework for developing an experimental real-time prediction system to identify where rainfall-triggered landslides will occur is proposed by combining two necessary components: surface landslide susceptibility (LS) and a real- time space-based rainfall analysis system.

Hazard Warning Systems: Review of 20 Years of Progress
TL;DR: The United States has no comprehensive national warning strategy that covers all hazards in all places as discussed by the authors, and public warning practices are decentralized across different governments and the private sector, thus, people are unevenly protected from the surprise onset of natural disasters.

Exploiting open functionality in SMS-capable cellular networks
TL;DR: The ability to deny voice service to cities the size of Washington D.C. and Manhattan with little more than a cable modem is demonstrated and countermeasures that mitigate or eliminate the threats introduced by these attacks are discussed.
