Journal ArticleDOI

Disturbances and structural development of natural forest ecosystems with silvicultural implications, using Douglas-fir forests as an example

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the use of principles from disturbance ecology and natural stand development to create silvicultural approaches that are more aligned with natural processes, including the role of disturbances in creating structural legacies that become key elements of the post-disturbance stands.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of Forest Management on Soil C and N Storage: Meta Analysis

TL;DR: In this article, a meta analysis of the literature on forest management effects on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) is presented. But the results of the meta analysis are limited to coniferous species.
Journal ArticleDOI

Basic principles of forest fuel reduction treatments

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors summarize a set of simple principles important to address in fuel reduction treatments: reduction of surface fuels, increasing the height to live crown, decreasing crown density, and retaining large trees of fire resistant species.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reducing uncertainty in the use of allometric biomass equations for predicting above-ground tree biomass in mixed secondary forests.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method for estimating forest biomass using allometric equations which relate the biomass of individual trees to easily obtainable non-destructive measurements, such as diameter.

Direct and indirect effects of white-tailed deer in forest ecosystems

TL;DR: In the mixed conifer‐hardwood forests around the Great Lakes in North America, widespread habitat modification and the extirpation of native predators and other ungulates have acted to boost populations of white-tailed deer to historically high densities, as evidenced by demographic analysis.
