Zone specific weather monitoring system using crowdsourcing and telecom infrastructure

01 Dec 2015-pp 823-827

TL;DR: A weather monitoring system which is a confluence of embedded systems, crowdsourcing and telecom infrastructure is proposed which can be coupled with wireless weather stations to provide real-time weather data.

AbstractWeather monitoring has become a quintessential aspect in a variety of fields. Often the challenge lies in fetching accurate information from the site. Having weather information regarding just a particular city isn't sufficient as the weather changes are brisk. In a large city, weather conditions vary from region-to-region. Zone-specific information is needed during such scenarios. Crowdsourcing can be largely influential in such cases. By acquiring resources from a group of service providers, it can aid in the easy retrieval of weather parameters. The most significant players in this approach are the Telecom Service Providers, who have a pool of infrastructure in the form of towers and grids. This infrastructure can be coupled with wireless weather stations to provide real-time weather data. In this paper, we propose a weather monitoring system which is a confluence of embedded systems, crowdsourcing and telecom infrastructure.

TL;DR: A review of the state of the art in this field can be found in this article, where the authors present a framework for categorizing the methods used in the seven domains of geophysics considered in this review.
Abstract: Data are essential in all areas of geophysics. They are used to better understand and manage systems, either directly or via models. Given the complexity and spatiotemporal variability of geophysical systems (e.g., precipitation), a lack of sufficient data is a perennial problem, which is exacerbated by various drivers, such as climate change and urbanization. In recent years, crowdsourcing has become increasingly prominent as a means of supplementing data obtained from more traditional sources, particularly due to its relatively low implementation cost and ability to increase the spatial and/or temporal resolution of data significantly. Given the proliferation of different crowdsourcing methods in geophysics and the promise they have shown, it is timely to assess the state of the art in this field, to identify potential issues and map out a way forward. In this paper, crowdsourcing-based data acquisition methods that have been used in seven domains of geophysics, including weather, precipitation, air pollution, geography, ecology, surface water, and natural hazard management, are discussed based on a review of 162 papers. In addition, a novel framework for categorizing these methods is introduced and applied to the methods used in the seven domains of geophysics considered in this review. This paper also features a review of 93 papers dealing with issues that are common to data acquisition methods in different domains of geophysics, including the management of crowdsourcing projects, data quality, data processing, and data privacy. In each of these areas, the current status is discussed and challenges and future directions are outlined.

TL;DR: A low-cost weather monitoring system which retrieves the weather condition of any location from the cloud database management system and shows the output on an OLED display and allows to access the current data of any station is proposed.
Abstract: The Internet of Things (IOT) describes the interconnection of devices and people through the traditional internet and social networks for various day-to-day applications like weather monitoring, healthcare systems, smart cities, irrigation field, and smart lifestyle. IOT is the new revolution of today's internet world which monitors live streaming of the entire world's status like temperature, humidity, thunderstorm, earthquake, floods etc. that can stagger an alarm to human life. This paper proposes a low-cost weather monitoring system which retrieves the weather condition of any location from the cloud database management system and shows the output on an OLED display. The proposed system uses an ESP8266-EX microcontroller based Wemos D1 board and it is implemented on Arduino platform which is used to retrieve the data from the cloud. The main objective of this paper is to view weather conditions of any location and allows to access the current data of any station.

TL;DR: The results show that the lab-made weather monitoring system is equivalently efficient to measure various weather parameters, and the designed system welcomes low-income farmers to integrate it into their climate-smart farming practice.
Abstract: Climate-smart agriculture is one of the techniques that maximizes agricultural outputs through proper management of inputs based on climatological conditions. Real-time weather monitoring system is an important tool to monitor the climatic conditions of a farm because many of the farms related problems can be solved by better understanding of the surrounding weather conditions. There are various designs of weather monitoring stations based on different technological modules. However, different monitoring technologies provide different data sets, thus creating vagueness in accuracy of the weather parameters measured. In this paper, a weather station was designed and deployed in an Edamame farm, and its meteorological data are compared with the commercial Davis Vantage Pro2 installed at the same farm. The results show that the lab-made weather monitoring system is equivalently efficient to measure various weather parameters. Therefore, the designed system welcomes low-income farmers to integrate it into their climate-smart farming practice.

TL;DR: The results show an improvement in energy, processing, and storage requirements for the processing of data on the IoT device in the proposed framework as compared to the sequential approach.
Abstract: Pervasive Internet of Things (IoT) is a research paradigm that has attracted considerable attention nowadays. The main aim of pervasive IoT is that in the future, the everyday objects (devices) would be accessible, sensed, and interconnected inside the global structure of the Internet. But in most of the pervasive IoT applications, the resources of an IoT device such as storage, processing, and energy are limited; as such there is a need for management of resources in such applications. Multiple aspects related to the data such as the type of data, size of data, number of transmission and reception of data packets, the structure of data, etc are taken into consideration while managing the resources of pervasive IoT applications. Therefore data management is essential for the management of limited resources in such applications. This paper presents the recent studies and related information in data management for pervasive IoT applications having limited resources. This paper also proposes a parallelization based data management framework for resource-constrained pervasive applications of IoT. The comparison of the proposed framework is done with the sequential approach through simulations and empirical data analysis. The results show an improvement in energy, processing, and storage requirements for the processing of data on the IoT device in the proposed framework as compared to the sequential approach.

TL;DR: In this article, existing definitions of crowdsourcing are analysed to extract common elements and to establish the basic characteristics of any crowdsourcing initiative.
Abstract: 'Crowdsourcing' is a relatively recent concept that encompasses many practices. This diversity leads to the blurring of the limits of crowdsourcing that may be identified virtually with any type of internet-based collaborative activity, such as co-creation or user innovation. Varying definitions of crowdsourcing exist, and therefore some authors present certain specific examples of crowdsourcing as paradigmatic, while others present the same examples as the opposite. In this article, existing definitions of crowdsourcing are analysed to extract common elements and to establish the basic characteristics of any crowdsourcing initiative. Based on these existing definitions, an exhaustive and consistent definition for crowdsourcing is presented and contrasted in 11 cases.

TL;DR: This paper designs a remote temperature and relative humidity sensing system that has added advantages compared with existing systems, namely, in its low cost and high memory capabilities and the ability to perform in both real-time as well as off-line.
Abstract: Sensing and recording of relative humidity and temperature plays an important role in many industries. In the past analogue devices were used for measurement of relative humidity and temperature. A simple technique combining analogue and digital circuit theory together with programming techniques has been used in this paper to design a remote temperature and relative humidity sensing system. The sensors analogue signal is applied to a micro-controller based data logger for storage purposes. The data is then transferred to the computer through standard RS232 serial port using the user interface program. The program also allows the user to input some of the important parameters such as sampling interval as well as starting date and time for the logging operation. A back-up power supply is also included to enable the system to remain functional in the event of a power failure. The proposed system has added advantages compared with existing systems, namely, in its low cost and high memory capabilities and the ability to perform in both real-time as well as off-line.

TL;DR: In this article, an integrated comfort sensing system on indoor climate using humidity, temperature and air flow sensors with integrated driving and amplifying circuit is presented, which can provide an effective means of measuring the indoor comfort sensing index of a human being.
Abstract: This research is about an integrated comfort sensing system on indoor climate using humidity, temperature and air flow sensors with integrated driving and amplifying circuit. The comfort sensing appears to be highly sensitive to temperature and air flow. We have designed and fabricated a one-bodied humidity/temperature sensor and a flow sensor. In order to drive sensors and amplify signals, the ASIC chip has been designed and integrated by CMOS technology. Because the first ASIC chip was not good for driving and amplifying signals, we designed and fabricated a different OP-AMP cell of the circuit. The microcontroller calculates a predicted mean vote (PMV) and comfort sensing vote (CSV) with sensing signals and displays a PMV on liquid crystal display (LCD) for human comfort on indoor climate. Our work has demonstrated that an integrated comfort sensing system can provide an effective means of measuring the indoor comfort sensing index of a human being. Experimental results with simulated environment clearly suggest that our sensing system can be used in many applications such as air conditioning system, feedback controlling in automobiles, homes, hospitals, etc.
