Androgen stimulation of the prostate is likely to be important in the promotion of BPH or PCa.
We propose that human BPH is an induced phenomenon that is usually initiated by local episodic exposure of periurethral prostate to mitogens secreted by the testis/epididymis.
Findings suggest that patients with BPH with a prostate volume ≥25ml and a PSA of ≥1.5ng/ml may benefit from combination therapy.

BPH and PCa can be linked together at a molecular and cellular level on genetic, hormonal, and inflammatory platforms suggesting that these prostatic diseases have common pathophysiological driving factors.
The increased risk is probably due to enhanced diagnostics of prostate cancer in men with BPH.
