How can Krashen's i 1 be operationalized?
5 answers
Krashen's i+1, a concept in second language acquisition, can be operationalized by providing learners with input that is slightly above their current level of competence. This approach aligns with Krashen's theory that language acquisition occurs when individuals understand input that challenges them just beyond their existing abilities. Additionally, incorporating elements of motivation and identity into the learning process can enhance the effectiveness of i+1, as these factors play crucial roles in language learning. While some scholars have suggested integrating Krashen's i+1 with Vygotsky's zone of proximal development, it has been argued that these concepts stem from different theoretical frameworks, making integration challenging. By combining Krashen's Input Hypothesis with curriculum design and considering emotional aspects in teaching, educators can effectively implement i+1 to facilitate language acquisition.
