To be successful at improving rural livelihoods, rural ports need to work closely with the economic development community, but in different ways than urban ports.
Comparisons of calculated results obtained with the FTP with results of field tests and calculations by the EMTP confirm the high accuracy and satisfactory efficiency of the FTP.
The findings demonstrate that though West African ports have bigger ports size and have a higher Container throughput TEUs compared to East African ports, these ports are in general less efficient than East African ports.
They provide insights on the ports' influence on local IE dynamics: as areas of testing and implementation of industrial symbiosis, ports can constitute exemplary self-sufficient areas, likely to boost the development of other local eco-parks; as drivers of local economic development, ports act as levers for the implementation of sustainable policies at a regional scale; as nodes in a global port network, ports can develop inter-port by-product exchanges and utility sharing.
It is argued that there were two distinct phases of port privatisation in the UK, with phase I involving the sale of state-owned ports and railway ports in the early 1980s, and phase II the disposal of major trust ports.
