How did multimodality entered linguistics?
4 answers
Multimodality entered linguistics through the cross-fertilization of various disciplines like conversation analysis, text analysis, semiotics, and media studies. Initially explored by conversation analysts examining the interplay between verbal and non-verbal communication, multimodality was further developed through contributions from gestalt theory, social semiotics, and media research. The term "multimodality" itself underwent evolution, encompassing both visible gestures as part of language and the integration of linguistic structures with imagistic expressions. This interdisciplinary approach led to the recognition that nonverbal communicative channels are integral to human communication, culminating in the emergence of multimodality as a perspective in the early 2000s. The study of signs, known as semiotics, also played a crucial role in shaping the understanding of multimodal communication.

Higher volatility of stock price CSR performance ?
4 answers
The relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance and stock price volatility has been extensively studied, revealing nuanced insights across different markets and sectors. Research indicates that CSR can both increase and decrease stock price volatility, depending on various factors such as market region, sector, and the quality of CSR reporting. In the Chinese market, the attention towards CSR has grown alongside the government's focus on controlling systemic financial risks, suggesting a potential impact of CSR on stock price volatility. Similarly, in the US banking sector, a significant positive relationship between CSR and stock price volatility was identified, suggesting that excessive focus on CSR might lead to increased costs and, consequently, higher volatility. This is supported by findings that CSR activities, particularly those focused on environmental concerns, can increase volatility by creating noise in financial markets. Conversely, high-quality CSR reporting in the D/A/CH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) has been shown to reduce stock return volatility, indicating that clear and comprehensive CSR disclosures can help in pricing firms' future CSR performance more accurately. This is echoed by research showing that higher CSR strengths are associated with lower idiosyncratic variance in the US, suggesting that CSR can act as a form of insurance against negative earnings shocks. However, the volatility of stock prices is generally lower for socially responsible companies, indicating a stabilizing effect of CSR on stock price volatility. Yet, market signals about CSR can amplify noise in equity markets, potentially increasing volatility due to the lack of systematic correlation with companies' economic fundamentals. International studies reveal that CSR's impact on stock price volatility varies by region, with CSR reducing crash risk in the US and, to a lesser extent, in Europe, but potentially increasing it in the Asia-Pacific region. The trading performance of CSR ethical firms also varies with market volatility, suggesting that different CSR categories may be more suitable for different market conditions. In summary, the relationship between CSR performance and stock price volatility is complex and influenced by multiple factors, including the quality of CSR reporting, regional market characteristics, and the specific aspects of CSR being considered.
