This new technique can substantially decrease the time needed to characterize the chirp of optical sources at the factory and could also be used to rapidly diagnose and optimize source chirp in experimental systems.
It does not presume to report a unique “critical velocity” for all smoke detectors, but suggests that such a value may indeed exist, but with differing values among different smoke detectors.
This relatively longer half-life makes it suitable for assessing exposure to cigarette smoke.
It generates more accurate chirp rate estimation especially under a low signal-to-noise ratio.
Results show good performance for chirp tracking even under strong noise corruption.
It appears worthwhile to explore the actual use of a chirp because significantly shorter test and analysis times might be possible.
The various measurements of the chirp parameter are in reasonable agreement.
