Findings We identified two missed windows of opportunity for early epidemic control of the COVID-19 outbreak, one in Dec 2019 and the other between 31 Dec and 19 Jan, when public attention was very low despite the emerging outbreak.
These findings suggest the importance of a careful focus on "how" broken windows policing programs are implemented.
Existing broken windows policing programs do not show evidence of influencing the key mechanisms of the broken windows model of crime prevention, though evidence is currently not persuasive.
Furthermore, when our deobfuscation is applied, our semantic-aware attack detection system outperforms both Windows Defender and VirusTotal with a 92.3% true positive rate and a 0% false positive rate on average.

To what extent are digital media involved in the spread of disinformation in society?
4 answers
Digital media play a significant role in the dissemination of disinformation in society. The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the use of digital channels, leading to a surge in disinformation circulation, posing risks to trust between organizations and users. Public television channels actively combat misinformation, relying heavily on human efforts for fact-checking tasks. The online business model's dependence on web traffic and advertisement creates incentives to maximize audience reach, potentially through sharing false stories on social media. Spanish digital media coverage during the Filomena storm highlighted the spread of hoaxes, revealing strategies aimed at increasing visits, contributing to the credibility crisis in the media ecosystem. Social media platforms like Facebook face challenges in regulating disinformation and hate speech, impacting human rights and democracy.
Are social media content moderation efforts sufficient to stop the spread of vaccination critics?
5 answers
Social media content moderation efforts play a crucial role in combating the spread of vaccination critics, but they may not be entirely sufficient. Research indicates that removing anti-vaccine content on one platform can lead to increased production of similar content on other platforms. However, findings also show that content moderation, such as suspending users, can have a significant impact in reducing the spread of vaccine-related misinformation globally. The interconnected nature of social media platforms underscores the need for coordinated moderation strategies across multiple platforms to effectively curb the dissemination of anti-vaccine sentiments. While moderation efforts are beneficial, a comprehensive approach involving public health institutions and social media platforms is essential to address the challenges posed by vaccination critics on a global scale.
Is the antivaccination movement becoming a trend?
4 answers
The anti-vaccination movement is indeed becoming a concerning trend, with a surge in opposition observed globally. Studies show an increase in anti-vaccination sentiments on platforms like Twitter, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The movement's growth is fueled by various factors, including the influence of prominent figures like Andrew Wakefield and the spread of misinformation online. Analysis of social media platforms like Facebook reveals a worrisome network of anti-vaccine pages that are rapidly expanding and gaining influence, potentially dominating online discussions in the future. This trend highlights the urgent need for targeted strategies to combat vaccine hesitancy and misinformation to safeguard public health.
What are some best practices for ensuring the ethical conduct of research in a study paper?
5 answers
To ensure ethical conduct in research, best practices include obtaining informed consent from participants, maintaining confidentiality and anonymity, and minimizing harm risks. Researchers should also consider the ethical implications of exposing participants to misinformation, including providing debriefing and assessing its effectiveness. Upholding ethical norms throughout the research process, such as promoting truth, minimizing errors, and being accountable for research content, is crucial. Additionally, university codes of research conduct should strongly endorse responsible research practices, require ethics approval, and discourage questionable research practices. By adhering to these practices, researchers can uphold ethical standards and ensure the integrity of their research.
What are implications of misinformation in the realm of public health?
5 answers
Misinformation in public health has severe implications, affecting decision-making, vaccine hesitancy, and compliance with guidelines. It can lead to harmful outcomes like adoption of unproven treatments, hate speech, and reduced vaccination rates, particularly impacting marginalized communities. To combat this, automatic detection methods using text mining and machine learning are proposed. Strategies like enhancing media literacy, boosting psychological immunity, and providing accurate information are crucial to counter misinformation's negative effects. Establishing dedicated units to monitor and counter misinformation, tailoring messages to diverse populations, and collaborating with community partners are effective approaches to mitigate the spread of harmful misinformation and improve health equity during crises like the Covid-19 pandemic.
HOw is Ai transforming the healthcare system?
5 answers
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the healthcare system by enhancing patient care, diagnostics, decision-making, and administrative tasks. AI applications include medical imaging analysis, virtual patient care, drug discovery, patient engagement, and administrative support, leading to early disease detection, improved treatment plans, and efficient healthcare delivery. AI tools like machine learning algorithms and natural language processing assist in analyzing vast medical data, predicting disease progression, and personalizing medicine. Additionally, AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants offer personalized health advice, streamline administrative tasks, and enhance patient engagement, ultimately improving healthcare accessibility and outcomes. However, challenges such as data privacy, algorithmic biases, and ethical considerations need to be addressed to ensure safe and effective AI integration in healthcare.
Islamic Communication Ethics: A General Principles
4 answers
Islamic communication ethics encompass several general principles derived from the teachings of the Qur'an and the Hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad. These principles emphasize using good and polite words, speaking effectively and efficiently, avoiding lies, respecting elders, refraining from hurting others, disseminating useful information, correcting misinformation, and providing advice. Additionally, Islamic communication ethics stress the importance of maintaining harmonious relationships on social media by using kind and polite language, avoiding spreading lies or hate speech, and engaging in politics without hoaxes, cheating, or criticizing. Overall, Islamic communication ethics promote positive interactions, truthfulness, kindness, and respect in all forms of communication, whether in personal interactions or on digital platforms.
What is misinformation of government?
5 answers
Misinformation by governments refers to the intentional dissemination of false information by governmental entities to influence public opinion or policies. This can have detrimental effects on democratic societies, eroding trust in public authorities and impacting decision-making processes. Governments may use misinformation to benefit home firms over foreign ones, especially when prioritizing profits over consumer welfare. The spread of misinformation, including through deceptive advertising and propaganda, poses a significant threat to information quality and societal well-being. To combat this, a comprehensive approach involving whole-of-government and whole-of-society strategies is essential, focusing on preparedness, response, prevention, transparency, and addressing the economic and structural drivers of misinformation.
How has the rise of social media contributed to the spread of fake news?
5 answers
The rise of social media has significantly contributed to the spread of fake news due to its rapid information-sharing capabilities and lack of robust verification mechanisms. Social media platforms lack control mechanisms to verify the accuracy of news, leading to the need for automatic fake news detection systems. Studies show that fake news spreads faster than real news on social media, often due to the sensational nature of false information. The spread of fake news can undermine evidence-based interventions and scientific credibility, particularly in contexts with low trust in public institutions. Platforms and users can combat fake news by promoting unbiased truthful news, fact-checking, and engaging with diverse perspectives. The double-edged nature of social media has made it crucial for platforms to collaborate with professional agencies to provide accurate information and adjust algorithms to reduce misinformation.
