The agrarian crisis is increasingly making agriculture an unviable occupation and hundreds and thousands of farmers are opting out of working on the land to move to urban areas, where jobs are scarce, further deepening the nutritional crisis.
The study recommends early stimulation of students interest in agriculture, award of scholarship to agriculture students and provision of grants to graduates in agriculture who desire to embark on enterprises and tailoring school practical experiences towards commercial agriculture.
Agriculture scientists can play a role in providing a step towards agriculture sustainability.
For some, it entails growth into specialized, market-oriented farms; for others, part-time farming combined with off-farm rural jobs; and for others, a move out of agriculture.
Several ways in which village action groups can support agriculture were identified that current industrial agriculture and even agri-environmental schemes fail to achieve.
While both specialized farmers and diversifiers into agriculture cultivate smaller areas of farmland, the latter one offers the greatest number of jobs including those outside agricultural production.
The present study suggests further steps towards identifying the green economy measures that are needed to create green jobs in the agriculture sector for rural youth.
Jobs will therefore need to be created on a massive scale in agriculture and the rural sector, especially given that around 200 million of these new workers will live in rural areas.
We argue in this article that a new paradigm has started to emerge as to how to use agriculture for development, pursuing a broadened development agenda.
It is recommended that agriculture agencies and agriculture related universities to take the responsibilities of introducing the concept of contract farming to the youth.
We find limited evidence that in a policy environment that is conducive to agriculture, formal education provides positive returns in agriculture.
