As a consequence, the results have implications for career development programmes designed to foster research skills and further research.
Through systematic planning early career researchers and other clinicians can plan and conduct research suitable for the Scholarly Project or other research activity.
It identifies as a gap in provision the paucity of provision of career‐long training in the ‘creative’ elements of research practice—specifically the methodological skills that have the potential to enhance individuals’ research capacity.
In addition, the research enables us to evaluate alternative modes of career development for industrial R&D.
