However, the campaign changed the way social media will be used in the future.
Such analysis provides new insights into the different approaches to social media campaigning which were embraced by specific candidates and party organizations, as well as an indication of the relative importance of social media activities, at present, for state-level election campaigns.
These findings have implications for understanding how the public uses social media to engage with political candidates and the possibilities for how technology could be altered to better facilitate these interactions.
Social media campaigns can be created and maintained relatively easily.
I suggest that Social Media and Society will be substantially focused on questions of social change.
Our results shed new light on the dynamics of online campaigning through social media and engagement with supporters through digital media.
Our data suggest that social media campaign effects are achieved through using Twitter as a broadcast mechanism.
The study adds support to the claim that campaigns do not simply adopt and utilize novel social media tools with the purpose of being innovative; they assess risks, costs and benefits.
We argue that this interactional approach can form the basis for further work conceptualizing the broader impact of activist campaigns and the treatment of social media as “data” more generally.
Our analysis revealed that scholars need to account for the ways that campaigns perceive their candidates in addition to the audiences, affordances, and genres of different social media platforms, as well as the timing of the electoral cycle, in order to effectively study strategic social media communication.
