The trend of warming climate in recent decades maybe the main reasons for the lake shrinkage, and human activities have little effect on it.
These results demonstrate that lakes have exhibited decadal-scale variability in warming rates coherent with global air temperatures and represent an independent line of evidence for the recent warming hiatus.
The consequences of this change bear the hallmarks of climate change induced lake warming and possible exacerbation of existing water quality, quantity and ecosystem changes.
Our results strongly suggest that the warming of Lake Lugano is tied to global climate change.
Since surface evaporation explains most of the lake's water losses, reliable estimates are paramount to the prediction of global warming impacts on Lake Titicaca and to the region's water resource planning and adaptation to climate change.
