This paper presents a novel way of thinking about how information systems are used in organisations.
These patterns can, in turn, be analyzed to inform the design of useful information systems and business processes.
It helps to understand where data are, which dimensions, spheres, stakeholders account for and what is the level of integration between different information systems existing in the firm.
However, for the technology to be properly exploited, the information systems function needs to be aligned with the business processes, and information systems specialists need additional knowledge and skills, and must adopt changed attitudes.
The method is useful when we are going to develop an information system (IS) in the context of a given business.
We believe that our study presented in this paper contributes to explore a new dimension to the existing view on business information systems in industrial companies.
