How effective was the Iranian government in fighting protests by shutting down the internet in 2022?5 answersThe Iranian government implemented internet shutdowns in an attempt to suppress protests in 2022. These shutdowns were part of a broader crackdown on nationwide protests that had been ongoing for several weeks. Despite the government's efforts, the protests continued and even outlasted previous protests in 2009 and 2019. The shutdowns made it difficult for protestors to communicate and share information about human rights violations, but they also led to creative measures by Iranians to counter-appropriate the government-imposed restrictions. The shutdowns also had an impact on internet traffic, with compromised machines and IoT devices being affected, as well as a decrease in the number of reachable Iranian networks. While the shutdowns may have hindered the protestors' ability to share information and document violations, they were not completely effective in stopping the protests.
